What is the fill line on this cleaner? Does someone have a pic? Is it the line that runs around the inside of the oval cleaner?

I never actually pay attention, just fill to the line. Used to be I just used whatever was leftover in a quart after filling the engine.

Owners manual says .8 pints.

Not exactly sure for a 1970, but the slightly later model has an arrow pointing to the fill level, its hard to see if you don't know what you are looking for, because its actually stamped into the baffle inside the filter, right where the small drain opening is. See this picture from the gallery (from samba member Billy Byars):

Yep. I didn't think mine had the arrow until I held it to the light just right.

I remember having an oil bath that had a thin, red-painted line that circled the lower interior.

The earlier cars have this red line, although it can wear off over time

He's fixed that now, by bending the ends of the clips. I bet some Gomer used a screwdriver to pry those off and mangled them.

Like most of those without "gray hair", Frodge and many others don't have the history of knowing what these VWs felt and sounded like when the VWs were "young"; so he didn't have hands-on experience with how the clips should look, feel, or operate, very understandable.

Believe me, same for all of us; on my 2nd day of work at a tiny VW engine replacement shop, I had to remove my first VW engine, with verbal instructions from the business owner. Then I learned how to strip down the engine, don't think I'd ever removed a spark plug before !! I didn't get paid well, but I sure learned a lot !!!
