I guess taking the door off and sending the hinges out to John is my best choice.

New door seals while I'm at it.

I thought that John kept cores in stock but it’s probably best that you have yours fixed so the paint will match.

I sold john some cores a few months ago, he may be out because he had an ad up looking for more. When I wanted mine done I just sent my og hinges to him, I think it was like $120. He bead blasts them, so if they are paint matched, let him know. I like them non painted.

I just like my doors to fit properly and have that German "clunk." I ordered new seals for both doors and I'll attempt the clothespin technique on the lower door seal I saw on your thread.

My passenger door seems perfectly fine, driver's not so much.

I rebuilt the striker plate with new parts, and installed the new rubber locating blocks.

Getting there.

Okay, I sourced and bought both driver's side hinges and I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they will be "as advertised." If not, they go off to John for re-bushing. Should I think about doing that anyway as I'm going to all of this trouble?

New door seals on the way, too. Little by little, this car is getting better. Not that it was horrible by any means, but I'm improving some of the nagging things it still needs.

If your replacement hinges are tight, theyre tight. They should have zero play and difficult to open/close by hand.

I delved in to the front trunk today to take a closer look at what I have and to replace a torn horn boot. I'm very pleased with what I found, the horns are pristine, and things look good in there. I did clean a bit, but everything is straight and nice.

The whole front trunk area looks pretty sanitary for a 53 year old car.

I sourced the driver's door hinges and sent them off to John.

This is going to be a bit of an adventure.

So happy that you are digging the Ghia my friend, it is a great car. I am loving the '55! I too added some o.g. trim rings.

That is the bug I traded for this Ghia. I liked both cars, it was a toss up. I'm more of a sports car guy, so the Karmann Ghia won my heart. It is sportier and such a beautiful automobile.

I've been accumulating the parts for the door surgery. John redid the hinges beautifully, new door and door handle seals, with new hinge screws on the way. I have the door stop kits and door seals to install on both doors. I suppose I'll order some L-360 Sea Blue paint to paint them to make everything look as it did from the factory.

I carefully unloosened all of the door hinge screws yesterday and one stripped. I will need an easy-out on that one. I'm surprised how heavy these doors are.

I'll be asking for pointers here if I run into issues.....

Final paint (L360 Sea Blue) on the rebuilt driver's side door hinges and screws before the complete door surgery....

I did the door hinge surgery yesterday, and it was a success for the most part. I had to drill out a few of the big Phillips hinge screws, but the heat from the drill bit helped coax them all out without any thread damage.
