Everett, here is a close translation of what the video explains:
The VW 1500...
-is a suitable car for mountains
-its aircooled engine that can never boil
-has strong acceleration
-has good roadholding
-offers room for 5 people
No wonder that there are so many VW 1500's.
Road looks like the old Saint Gotthard Pass which connects northern Italy with soutnern Switzerland. Similar perspective and article: https://www.classicdriver.com/sites/default/files/...k=sQWJunxy |

From my dad's huge family photo collection; a 720 dpi scan of a Kodachrome slide with hardly any color correction needed by the scanner. Taken in 1964, somewhere in Southern Calif. Dad was a field service engineer for VW Pacific in Culver City in the western Los Angeles area. VW imported some Squarebacks (aka Station Wagon, or the German model name Variant) a year before the original market introduction (late '65? for '66 model year) to be distributed among the employees for evaluation, and for service and Parts market preparation. Note the lack of side marker lights! In another photo of the same car it had conventional Calif. "black" license plates. That's my mom and me. |
My 65 Square could be one of those cars. I bought it in the LA area (it had black plates, all red tail lights, and no side markers) and, on the bulkhead under the fuel tank, it was marked "USA" in grease pencil. _________________ 1988 Ford Festiva L

BSQUARE, that would be a big coincidence, but plausible explanation. I have no idea how many such Squarebacks were imported for VWoA's evaluation, but probably at least several dozen in the LA area. Could've been assigned to field personnel who drove alot to dealers and therefore could collect driving impressions in a short time.
Have you considered applying for a Birth Certificate from VWAG, to try to find the final delivery port as well as any special model equipment such as US-specific option codes? |
