Any who else have this problem? My belly rubs against the steering wheel and the seat is already adjusted as far back as it will go. With the understanding that the gut is not going away any time soon, does anyone have any suggestions on how to get the seat back farther so that my belly doesn't rub the steering wheel? I was thinking of trying to remove the bulkhead behind the seat, but not sure if that would make a difference. Also considering going with a smaller diameter steeling wheel, but from everything I've seen here, that is a much bigger job than you would imagine. So, leaving aside the fat jokes, does anyone here have any solutions?

no. Lose the weight or tolerate the wheel in your gut. Be sure that the seat is all the way back. You might recline it a little too. There are other folks here who are big guys and that is just how it is. If you go to a small wheel you'll find it hard to turn when at a stop like maneuvering to park. These seats tend to stick with age so be sure you are getting full travel from it - nothing binding it.

I know when I had a '74 with a bulkhead, I was able to cut an extra notch in the seat rails to get the seat to go back further. I think a Vanagon seat back is a bit thinner as well so would go back further but not sure that it can be used on pre '76 buses.

I'd say a smaller wheel and electric power steering would be fine..
sure it's a few $$ and most Bay owners are cheap and will tell you it's not worth it. but it's your bus and your driving comfort...
plus makes parallel parking a breeze
