The ballast resistor is supposed to be for the Mallory distributor. Maybe it’s not needed in my setup, I don’t know for sure.
The other coil I have was from the engine that came with the bus. But that engine doesn’t exist in any form currently.
I’m still going to give it a try when I get back in town though.
Is there any issue with the carbs I need to address?
Thanks again for everyone’s help!

It started! Very ugly though. I had to turn the distributor a bit to keep it from going 5000+ rpm.
I managed to keep it around 3000 rpms
I replaced the blue Bosch coil with an Accel Super Stack 8140c.
I also made sure the battery was fully charged.
Also lots of exhaust leaks
So yay! But what’s the deal with the excessive rpms? To much fuel?
The fuel pump is a Facet which I think is rated for 2-3 psi. I’d have to check.
Any ideas?

Ok, I removed the update kit from the carbs. In doing so I found a couple places where I had forgotten the o-ring when I rebuilt them. So that's got to help.
I can get it started and it will run ok for a couple minutes, then it dies and I can't start it again.
When I try to restart it the engine coughs and may catch briefly.
Eventually it's harder to turn over the engine as I assume the battery is wearing out.
When it's running the RPMs seem to bounce a bit around 1000 I think (according to my multi-meter with the inductive pickup).
It also isn't happy when I push the throttle.
Also the Facet pump is pretty loud, if that's normal I may have to do something about it.
I don't know what to do next, any ideas?
Thanks! Todd

once you get it running you need to balance the carbs. Make sure there are no vacuum leaks - sometimes folks get one or both carbs / manifolds slightly hung up on the tin so there is a massive vacuum leak under them. _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

I think they’re bolted on pretty solidly and the intake has good clearance but I will double check.
Do I need to get the idle correct before I balance the carbs? _________________ 1975 vw bus,

The engine is now idling ok and I used that snail gauge to balance both sides.
Still have a few issues:
1. #2 cylinder doesn't seem to be firing. When I remove the spark plug wire, nothing changes. Removing any of the other 3 results in the engine stumbling.
I can get spark from the spark plug.
Compression test is about 110.
I can see fuel drip into the carb throat from the pump jets when I open the throttle.
I adjusted all the valves.
2. #3 cylinder pops back through the carburetor when accelerating.
3. The left side of the engine is getting noticeably warmer.
I put cht probes on each cylinder. Connected to the head with a bolt next to the spark plug hole.
After several minutes of idling, here are the temp:
1. 257
2. 165
3. 305
4. 327
Any ideas?
Thanks, Todd

I would double check firing order. |

Just double checked,
The firing order looks correct. 1-4-3-2 _________________ 1975 vw bus,
