I have one, if it ever stops raining (jealous California?) I'll take some photos of it for him. He is interested in it.

Needing photos, I'll guessing he's doing some sort of access mod to his.......

I never knew there were two types! I will look for a late model one if only to lighten the load on my tiny engine. One of those posts suggests it is quieter for diee too.

My '90 has a metal lid. Is this correct or did it originally come with a fiberglass one?

It originally came with a fiberglass one. I think the metal ones are a good idea with vans that have gasoline engines fitted, though, as it might slow the spread of an engine fire.

Original example photo was of a later model South African T3... different beast altogether, let alone the engine lid. 😉

I'm surmising the OP wants to do this https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=180224 , but using a Vanagon lid.🤔

I'd think you would have a lot easier time if you cut out the vanagon hatch jamb as well from a donor vehicle.

I agree. I just can’t find one. Being stuck in Arkansas isn’t helping. Lol

I may have to find a partner on the Forum who can assist me!

honestly if you are putting a engine hatch into a non-hatch bay a Type-III hatch is the best fit..

seems that wayoutsalvage is in North Arkansas and their images show dozens of Type-IIIs...
