I never knew there were two types! I will look for a late model one if only to lighten the load on my tiny engine. One of those posts suggests it is quieter for diee too.

My '90 has a metal lid. Is this correct or did it originally come with a fiberglass one?

| It originally came with a fiberglass one. I think the metal ones are a good idea with vans that have gasoline engines fitted, though, as it might slow the spread of an engine fire. |

Original example photo was of a later model South African T3... different beast altogether, let alone the engine lid. 😉

| I'd think you would have a lot easier time if you cut out the vanagon hatch jamb as well from a donor vehicle. |

honestly if you are putting a engine hatch into a non-hatch bay a Type-III hatch is the best fit..
seems that wayoutsalvage is in North Arkansas and their images show dozens of Type-IIIs...
