Any concern that the reduced mass won't tolerate the heat as well or will the greater surface area allow the oil to cool them even better? |
There's no heat in granny or reverse cuz you're in it only for a short time. And generally very low on the engine's HP curve. 4th gear gets hot cuz often (in 4th) you're up near the top of the HP curve. _________________

Right on. I was thinking of the way that brake discs need to have sufficient mass to absorb the heat without overload and warping. _________________ '84 Vanagon GL 1.9 WBX

Using the granny with the same engine power produce ofc more and faster heat than using the same engine power in 4th.
First bcs of the number of bearings under load, 2nd bcs of more transmitted torque, 3rd bcs less cooling.
Drilling gear wheels in a t3 box?
After cooling, oiling, filtering, overfilling, painting it yellow, it does not surprice me

gears that is beautiful.
A couple questions if you don't mind.
1) were you planning to move the oil filler bung to the driver-side?
2) Could that oil-holder-arc could be a bolt-on piece, where each 4th gear ratio has a matched arc radius? This matched arc could also close off against the forward teeth ends to ensure the oil travels across the tooth in the rearward direction. |
Sodo, this shows the left side of the housing that has a second oil-add hole, a small oil level indicator hole, and the oil inlet to feed the mainshaft ball bearing and 4th gear. It's nice being able to add oil on the uncluttered side.

We're perhaps a week away from completion of ground thrust washer selection and the 4-bolt retainer. Also waiting for more bolt-on VW lower splash plates to arrive ..

I left that ad up because I'd already paid for the ad upgrade. As luck would have it, the machinist and machine shop are in the process of moving (surprise to me), so I don't know for certain when these will once again be available. The good news is that I was able to take care of my patient back-ordered customers at a very special introductory price. _________________ aka Pablo, Geary

Do you have any left, or does German Transaxle?
My unit is headed over there for a rebuild now, was hoping to add one of these at the same time. |
