At my last autox event 3rd run all of a sudden the motor starts banging and sputtering. At first I though a part of my header fell off. Back in grid I noticed the rubber boot in between carb pipe to actual intake on heads had a big hole in it. I thought that may have been cause, they were old.

Just replaced them and attempted to start it up and it is still back firing and banging. The optimist in me wants it to be fixable, new motor this winter

Your lady got it right......

Something inside is broken.....

Guess what, you get to tear it down sooner than you wanted to....

Its not blown yet, hold it at about 4500 rpm for a few. Then it might be blown.

Yeah, that's bad. I'm betting broken crank.

I'd tear it down now before you the case gets wrecked.

It will be interesting to see what it did. Might just be a piston broke in two. Are the valves still adjusted about right? Or is one all loose?

Ok thats what I figured. So should I remove valve covers and check valves then pull heads as my first steps?

Yep. Start at the covers, and work your way in. Post pictures of the carnage.

yep, pop the valve covers and see what you have. i just had mine drop a valve seat, jam open long enough to lose the pushrod, then the valve closed and sounded EXACTLY like what you have.

Upon further tear down seems someone left out little cap on the end of valve stem Sad

Also motor needs a rebuild cylinders 3 and 4 are full of oil. I am guessing rings shot? I will be selling off the heads CB 044's, intake, Carb Weber DGV 5A 32/36, all engine internals and cam powerful at 4500 to 6500.

More like the adjusting screw failed, right where it's cross-drilled @ the oil port: check that particular pushrod for straightness & a mangled tip.
The lash cap may have migrated down the P/R tube, so look for it inside the case.

I'm not sure how compression works.
Turbos don't produce torque, they produce HP. Instead of torque.
The real problem with NA engines is you don't hear the nice whine of the turbo as it spools up.
Before I commit, I'm going to do more research because I don't really know what piston rings are.
