From what I've read so far.
Quote from janerick3 (Ovals had 4 types of front heater channel vents:
- '53s had the round hole carried over from the splits
- '54s and '55s had a larger, oval hole in the same location with a mesh screen tack-welded to the inside of the channel
- '56s and early '57s had stamped louvers in the same location
- A new heater channel, with an internal pipe, was introduced on 19 December 1956 (9 January 1957 on cabriolets), per Progressive Refinements. The footwell vent was moved closer to the door, where it remained through the 1968 model year.)
These would be 2 years only 54 and 55. _________________ .

I found an error when checking the Progressive Refinements, Volume 1. It lists in the Body section, page A-33 that on Dec 19th floor vents on the '57 Sedan were moved rearward beginning with Chassis 1 385 974, and Body 397 084.
However, from my Birth Certificate from VW, I know my '57 Bug was also built on Dec 19th, 1956 and the Chassis number is 1 387 624 and the Body is 398 343.
Doing the math shows that my chassis number is 1650 units after the change over and my Body number is 1259 units after the cut over number.
I'm sure folks have discovered other errors in the archives but it makes me wonder why they are off so much in this case. _________________ '57 Beetle- Horizon Blue
