And it's interesting you say that finster, as I have seen '70s cars retrofitted with a large red light.
The original owners in Belgium told me that they had to get this particular white light installed to comply with new road laws requiring a rear-facing fog light.
On modern European cars, there is in fact often a white fog light incorporated into the taillight assembly on the driver's side only. We have a place in southern Portugal and we always rent cars when we are there. They all have them although the odd rental did have a red one! |

Rear fog lights have been required in many countries since the early '70s. But they are always bright red, not white
Today you could fit a bright red LED and use a backup light housing as a rear foglight. Back in the day I don't think they made red colored bulbs, so that almost surely is a backup light. There were/are red colored lenses for those backup light housings. Perhaps it was fitted as a fog light, but then converted to a backup light? Those bright rear fog lamps were not allowed in the US (and perhaps other countries) for a time.
Today they often get used as original-styled third brake lights. I planned to do just that with my fastback but the rake of the rear window didn't allow for it to be fitted. I have a period-accessory rear fog lamp on it now under the bumper on the left side. |

More captured Kubelwagens, this time by the Americans.
The first photo is my favorite, because it shows a photo taken by a GI, who identified the car as a "German Jeep,"
and the "1st VW." Note the driver, who is mockingly wearing a German helmet and giving the Nazi salute.
This may have been posted before, but it's worth a re-run. Americans in Sicily.
This looks more like France. These Kubels are lighting challenged.
It looks like an officer commandeered this one.
Finally, this awesome photo of a war trophy. It looks like Germany in the background.
