Looking for recommendations on where to get assembled engines.
What can I get for say $5,000.00
Vs say $3,000
Looking for more power than say a stock 1500 that I could drive once a week.

Long block or complete? With or without clutch and exhaust? New vs rebuilt? Private garage builder or professional builder through a business with a warranty?

All these questions need to be answered as they all effect "what you can get for $3000 vs $5000"

you're talking turn-key... for a quality build... i'm guessing a stock engine..

maybe a 1776 or 1915 but that'll be close to your $5k limit..

google "type 1 turn key" should get a handful of results.

You can get a well built 1776 or 1914 longblock, brand new for $3500.

Complete with thermostat, flaps, all the proper tin, and even the little air 2" rectangular deflectors under the cylinder heads?

A longblock only comes with the air deflectors. A complete engine would come with everything, I sell completes with and without thermostats.

Are you considering a turn-key engine to replace the supposed 1776 one in your Beetle from your other threads? Have you considered tearing down that 1776, learning how the VW engine works, and rebuilding it yourself? For the rebuild you could upgrade selected parts and get it back running for a much more reasonable amount.

My direct exposure to Beetles started as a teenager in the mid '70's. I had regarded the engine as a "black box" entity which I never touched; until I received a 1600 dual-port for free from a friend who was taking a '71 Super to the junkyard due to extensive Connecticut rot. This was in the late 1980's. Engine ran well when he took it out. I tore it down, read up on rebuilding using both the Bentley manual and the Idiot book, as well as the How to Hotrod your VW engine. When the engine was finished after the rebuild and started for the first time, it was an enormous thrill. Was a very mild build keeping it at 1600 cc and stock valve heads; just sprung for an Engle 100 cam and Dell'Orto 34 FRD single-throat dual carbs.
