This was mounted to the engine using the three bolts at the lower back of the case. It seems to be used to direct warmed air from the duct-work that flows past the pushrod tubes. Anyone know if this is an after market part or is it original? None of my other VWs ever had one of these.

Not an air deflector but one of two pieces of engine guards that would have originally been on your motor. The other piece looks like a BBQ grill and it mounts to the bottom of the motor where this piece mounts to the back of the motor. It is Thing specific and is often times removed (and lost) so that is probably why you've never seen one before. _________________ '74 Thing

Got it now, thanks! I have the grill mounted as well as the front piece as well. This all makes sense now! |

Sorry but I completely forgot about the front guard. Although I have one I cannot mount the rear guard to my motor since I have an aftermarket oil pump filter assembly that mounts on the rear of the block. _________________ '74 Thing
