We have tried not to remove paint or undercoat unless we have to, but in places it needed flatting back to bare metal where rust was coming through. For that we used a DA sander then manually finished it leaving a slightly rough finish to key the new paint to.
For underseal, we used a wallpaper scraper with a rounded end and that worked really well, finishing off by wiping any excess off with white spirit. _________________ Major; 1977 Westfalia Campmobile

Thanks dude, slow steady steps and as thorough a job as possible, we are in no rush to get finished.
Its quite enjoyable at the moment as there is little welding to do, ok we have had some surprises but its meant we have tackled areas more thoroughly resulting in a better end result! _________________ Major; 1977 Westfalia Campmobile

Blimey, it was the end of May when I last updated this thread, we have got lots done! Aside to that, we have been exploring the UK & enjoying summer
The rear window is all welded up now
the left hand side of the bodywork has been flatted back, small dents filled and flatted down

We was on a winning streak and got the painting sorted and looking good but disaster struck
the paint looked great, so we refitted the drivers door
the paint was a different shade to the door and the whole of the right hand side
our paintshop accidentally mixed up the wrong colour, hence the issues. He sorted it out for us quickly!
Looking much better now

On to the left hand front wheelarch
rusty in places but no welding needed, which is pleasing! cracked on and got it all primed, stone chipped and coloured
rebuilt the brake caliper
one rusty backplate
all painted and the suspension / brakes rebuilt and back on four wheels
and finishing with the towbar and bumper irons painted up nice!

Looks like a lot of tough, ackward, and time consuming work. Nicely done, marching ahead has gotta feel good. |

the time consuming work is well worthwhile, knowing the tougher bits of the project have been done well! Rewarding too _________________ Major; 1977 Westfalia Campmobile

Back on track and we've moved on to the rear left hand side to rejuvenate all of that.
Rear brakes will have new slave cylinders, new hand brake cable and the backplate derusted and repainted & the adjusters cleaned up and lubricated
the wheelarch itself is rusting through the underseal, no surprise on that one, but there are no rotten sections at all!
initial scraping off the underseal revealed some good areas of original paint whilst stone chipped sections have rusting, which is easily treated
But in the meantime, we went camping quite a lot... _________________ Major; 1977 Westfalia Campmobile
