I have kind of. A weird question. My car after parked overnight will always show right in the top line of the dipstick after the initial wipe. It’s been like this al summer. It’s been a hot and humid summer here in ny. Today was cool. In the 70s, , I came back, hour later, the oil is between the lines. It was at the top line before I left for an 8 mile trip. I came back, and an hour and a half later it is between the lines. I checked under the car and there are no leaks or anything. What is going on? Does the oil get trapped somewhere when it is cooler? It didn’t lose 1/2-3/4 quart in 8 miles. |

It could if the engine was failing. Fill it back up and go for the same drive. Recheck the oil. Maybe it is burning it up! _________________ Jimbo

Should I tear the engine down? |

This is a different thing. I’m not talking about pulling it in the morning vs wiping and then pulling a second time. All summer I would come home and the oil seemed at least to be at the top line. Not today. Today was the first day where it wasn’t in the 80sor 90s. Even an hour or two later it is not at the top. No leaks or wetness. I don’t get it. I’ll check in the morning again. |

Try this.
I wipe the dipstick first. Then with the dipstick all the way down on the tube, I rock the dipstick back and forth 5-6 times before I pull it up and check it.
I do this several times. I have external oil coolers so I run a higher oil level as seen at rest. How you work the dipstick along with temperature and oil viscosity can impact the dipstick reading. |

It’s been consistent at the top line all summer. I checked before I left today, it was at the top line. Went for 8-10 mike 35 mph ride, came back and it was between the lines. Weird to me. No leaks. Only difference is it wa really cool today. |

Be consistent about when you check the oil. Check it before you start it first time each day and add as needed.
And don't worry so much. These cars are not like modern cars ... they do use oil. _________________ Brian
