I am restoring a bus72 and bought a 78 parts bus. I need some direction to wire the fuel injected type 4 engine into the 72 bus ( and 72 wiring harness). Thanks for helping a rookie.
See photos.

It is only four wires:
-Full time power to the double relay, #30 circuit
-Ignition to the double relay, #15 circuit
-Wire from the double relay to the fuel pump (the pump also needs a ground)
-Wire from the starter solenoid to the double relay
Your bigger problems will be the fuel return (you can swap the tanks if the later tank is good and the air filter mount.

Thank you Wildthings! I did grab the 78 fuel tank and welded in the air filter bracket. |

Welcome to The Samba. If you use that 78 tank. Realize the fuel sender for a 78 tank will not work properly with a 72 fuel gage in the cluster. Since you have it all apart replace your early style fuel gage with a late model. Do some research on that gauge swap. _________________ Keep on Busin'

what do the photos have to do with a FI conversion?
Use the firewall on the later bay if it will fit. It has the holes and the brackets for decal valve etc.
Grab the overhead fan and all the engine bay wiring out of the 1978. The ECU will be on the right hand side - you'll need to modify the 1972 to accept it. I don't know if that will change where the fuel fill is or not. Use the trans out of the 1978 if you can for 2L gearing. That might require using the shift rod off the 1978 also, maybe not. I believe that the trans mount on the nose will be a little different also, maybe not. I believe some 1972 did not come with the upper ears on the trans and also the upper transmission transverse bracket. Check on that also. The rubber mounts on that bracket will need replacement as well. The clutch cable length may change with the 091 trans too. _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

Fabbing up the little house for the brain might be interesting..
Like was said, they mixed around fuel tank filler parts at the time.
Perhaps it might take the 002 bell housing to make the 091 fit?
I like FI as much as the next guy,
But,
If that were my project, I’d be getting a set of Webers. _________________ Bus Motor Build

Most of the difference in the length of an 091 and an 002 is in the nose cone. |

Cutting a hole for ECU is straight forward. The indentation on the body where the ECU fits into is already there on a 72. Or at least it is on mine. Working on FI without a top hatch is going to be challenging. _________________ Keep on Busin'

didn't the 1972 have the oversized hatch? _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

I believe the hatch started in '73.
Before I realized I already had a hatch I was talking about putting one in and someone recommended I look for a type 3 hatch because they're bigger. _________________ 1973 Wild Westerner "Mr. Peabody"

From what I recall, the engine-compartment ceiling hatch was introduced for the 1973 model-year, but only for the 1973~79 VW 17/18/2000 Type 2s; NOT the 1973~79 VW 1600 Type 2s which never had them. _________________ Regards.
