Stoked!
If you want me to talk to Xatie, and pontificate upon the long-term benefits of a job well done, let me know..
I’m voting for the whole 100% stock treatment - with working/clean heat risers, thermostat/flaps, oil bath cleaner with functional stovepipe, pea-shooters, the whole enchilada.
Your mild cam and SVDA mod won’t ruin the effect.
Once you get it all 100% like Mother Volkswagen intended,
The experience is unreal.
The flawless cold-starts and warm-up/running is something to experience.
It’s like this precision sewing machine or something.
The quiet grace, the reserved manners, the flawless low-end pull..
Too often we have driven these beaters with some obnoxious header or some stupid open filter or some such...
If you set the depth of the pea-shooters correctly, so they pull lots of hot air thru the manifold heater tube - Nirvana.
VERY few these days have experienced what it was all about back in the beginning..
Once you experience it, you will understand fully.
Do it right, and you’ll see what I mean.
You GO brother! _________________ Bus Motor Build

Oh, and have them do a full dynamic balance job on the rotating assembly..
Yes, it’s hard to find someone to do it.
Yes, you have to send the pulley, crank, flywheel, pressure plate and all the bolts.
Yes, it costs a “lot” of money.
Yes, it’s another delay.
Yes, many say you don’t need it on a stock motor.
But, if you don’t do it now, then when??
Balance on new pressure plates these days licks hairy dog balls..

Yes. All the encouragement to Xatie is appreciated
Yes. It will have all the working original fixins you mentioned (74 is paper filter) except exhaust. I haven’t found an original exhaust I like yet. Haven’t looked that hard. But it will happen at some point. If any of the three of you reading this thread have a lead on an original exhaust for this build. Let me know. _________________ Keep on Busin'

I just checked out the reviews on the Bosal muffler. It seems that TDC may be into something. The manufacturer brags about the perfect fit. They also mention quality, too; but a good fit is a good start.
So ... when the time comes, I’m going to give the Bolton a shot. It certainly can’t be worse than Dansk, and it might deliver the quality and fit the mention.

Only difference for a 1974 between the two (Cali vs Federal) is solely a dual-heat riser set up, I believe. Fitment otherwise should be the same.

Well, the engine is together. Kinda. Was going for long block today.
My buddy just wasn’t satisfied with the AutoLinea heads. So off to the machinists they went, today. The beauty of this is he went straight to work on
them tonight. He was texting pictures while I did other mundane tasks. Sorry no pictures, they are on my buddies phone. But holy crap they look proper. Castings cleaned up. And a whole lot of techniques being used Clatter tought me. Probably more then this stockish engine deserved. I’m not going to complain should be back this weekend.
Meanwhile my buddy dug out some heater boxes he wanted to use instead of the crap that came with the bug. He had me clean them up. He said go light in the solvent tank as to not saturate with solvent. Ok cool. Knock off some gunk and good to go. So I did.
Then he said. “ We going to paint them.” Ah shit. That means hours of prep. So I did. Brush, pick, scrape, sand, scuff, and repeat. Brush, pick, scrape, sand, scuff, and repeat.Brush, pick, scrape, sand, scuff, and repeat.Brush, pick, scrape, sand, scuff, and repeat.Brush, pick, scrape, sand, scuff, and repeat.Brush, pick, scrape, sand, scuff, and repeat. So I did. This is half way through this ass whipping process.
Pretty sure an electric wire wheel and a Dremel would have cut my time in half.
But it was a nice night listening to an entire album of Kurt Vile and The War on Drugs while I meticulously dicked with these heater boxes.

Just a thought or two,
From someone paralyzed by retentivity..
The Bentley shows how you are supposed to drill out the spot-welds,
So you may properly clean the sludge/stink from within heater boxes.
This might allow a proper (ceramic?) coating of the tin,
And perhaps the use of an insulation product besides asbestos.
(Company Thermal Zero sells a nice replacement on Amazon)
Additionally,
Those GO1 heads have valves and guides of DogDoo quality.
Certainly worth it, while you are in there,
To get a better set of stock-sized valves.
The guides in mine came loose in short order,
So it is likely that a bit o’ fittin’ With a better set of guides,
Maybe the next size up,
Would ensure a long, happy life for your motor.
Perhaps even beyond your own,
Should your overextension bring her wrath.. _________________ Bus Motor Build

Thank you Clatter, I got you brother. All is sorted out. Just like you taught me at your place my buddies are very experienced with these heads. Just got them back from the machinist. Cast flashing clean up was last night.

Thought about going inside heater boxes. I know the drill. Going to run them for now. Later I will rip into them if necessary.
And anyone interested in a type 3 work of art. Check out Clatter’s thread. It’s about a hundred pages But truly remarkable.

On your heater boxes, don't cut them open. Get a bucket big enough to submerge them in. Fill it with hot water and a degreaser. Let them soak overnight. If you can find round brushes to push inside them to scrub, even better.
I did this with two nasty, used bus heater boxes on my bus. They came out super clean inside and out. Zero smell when I turn on the heat in the bus.
Another option is to find a shop with a big ultrasonic parts cleaner. Mine isn't big enough. However, the parts I clean in it come out sparkling clean in a short time. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

Can’t believe you found that 11-year-old STF thread!
Funny that the end of that story years later was the guides falling out..
A new set of guides, though, and away we go..
Wanna make sure you have all cooling tin in place;
Haven’t seen one of these with a complete set of tins in -years-.
There was a little show here a while back,
Had at least 100 cars,
And I counted exactly -three- that had a thermostat.
I want to see a picture of your Hoover Bit in place!

Good call on the Hoover Bit. I didn’t have one. However my buddy has a box of them. He picks them up at swap meets when he sees them.
Thermostat will be in there as well.
Question about Tin. I recall in another thread seeing these little rectangular pieces of tin with a notch in them. Can’t remember exactly where they go or what to ask for when searching.
Ha! never mind found them here

Does anybody know if I need these on the AutoLinea heads. Or are they unique to German VW heads? I suppose I should just call Clark at AP. _________________ Keep on Busin'

So Clatter. I was being sarcastic and asked my buddy if he and the machinist had plans to do a full “Dynamic Balance job” on this build showing him your absurd reply....
There was a pause, and he said “It’s was” you are right. It’s not cheap
