As I didn't find the right thread to place this, I am opening this one to post about recently bought/installed parts that fail early.

I spent a lot of time to install this new axle boot and after 400 miles use is already leaking and shows cracks all around.

Since I'm about to do that job in a few weeks perhaps you could tell us who's boot it was?

Given the garbage quality of many repro parts this could quickly become a bigger thread than the whines. You could fill up multiple pages just with front transmission mounts that fail within a month on install.

This is one of those parts that seem to be complete trash unless they are 40 years old. This is also one of the few places that an EMPI part is the best choice.
I use these, as do most folks I know, and they last indefinitely. Plus, they come in a wide range of colors to impress the judges. Just don't forget your ground mirrors for the display.

So those big ribbed ones ^^ really last the longest?
Makes sense after I just stretched my split boots in place.

Short answer, yes. And they have pleasure ribs, so that's good.

If I turn it inside out will it be more fun for me? Very Happy

Good to know, yet suprising considering who makes it, do they stretch on?, or do you have to do the full dismantle?

They are split boots, so no stretching required.

I have no experience with their omnidirectional-ness. Might be worth a try. Wink

That might lead to another type of early failure...

ok, seems I was dealing with MADE IN BRAZIL PREMIUM QUALITY

thanks for your inputs Smile The one that failed is clearly made in EPDM rubber..the EMPI one is silicone rubber, so that might help.

I'll look out for one on quality rubber that looks original.

You can get the stock looking pair from Empi as well (9916) if you don't want to run the colored accordion boots. I'm running them on my bus and so far so good.

I have the yellow ones on my '56 beetle. They were on there when I got the car in 2004 - they still look good a don't leak.

They are the bolt-on type. The previous photo just doesn't show the split and the hardware. Here is a better shot.

They're also handy in a road trip kit. If you tear a good one open- the accordion will get you home until a proper repair is made.

I think it would be really helpful to have a “winner and losers” style thread for split bus products...

You can just stretch them over the flange with a large screwdriver, you don't need to take the axle tube apart. And either way you do it with the one piece boots, you will be doing it again in a few years. They are junk.

I use EMPI split boots (not accordion ones) at the shop, and used original or NOS on my personal cars. I have installed 50 year old used boots that work just fine.

tried once with nasty results. I also think this stresses the boot rubber.

gotcha. I also start to think that one piece boots are junk, mainly because there is low demand of them for evident reasons.

It's my last try. If one of these break I will use open boots.
