|
|
Hi All
Just put on a alternator conversion on my 70 bus. Would like to torque rear fan nut to 45 pounds, but how do I hold the front pulley nut to stop it from spinning. I thought of a wrench, but that would only get to tight, and will need to un do again. Any help is appreciated.
Thank you |

A strap type oil filter wrench works good for that. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Holding the pulley nut will NOT get it too tight. It will be tightened to exactly the same torque as the fan nut, which
is what is specified.
If you don't care for doing it that way, you can take off the rear pulley half and hold the shaft via a wrench on the flats of
the front pulley half hub. _________________ '67 bug: seized by the authorities

I used an impact gun to get it off but I figured I would need to tighten it with the correct torque settings to put it back on. On you saying that is not the case? _________________ 77 westy 2.0 FI

If doing it in the car, you can lock the nut of the fan with a socket and bar and then torque the nut on the pulley end, thereby getting the correct torque on both nuts.
You can also just hold the shaft by using a large flat blade screw driver in the cutouts in the forward belt pulley half, jamming it against the head of one of the through bolts on the alternator, as per the Bentley. |
