Yeah man I think the Okrasa heads are pretty much sold.
This week I should have the rest of the door panels on. Then realized I still gotta weld on the middle seat tabs to the floor - even though I don’t have one for it yet. I’ll probably need to pull that long panel off. I really need to clean them really good. _________________ GFK

Thanks brotha I’m still trying to find a few odds & ends. Wanted to work on it this weekend but I’m going to the show in Eureka Springs so I’ll have to wait till I get back. _________________ GFK

I have to say, thanks for posting your builds. I've said it before, your El Pavo thread initially gave me the notion to try some rust repair and paint blending on a split myself.
You had mentioned that the turqis color had given you some fits and that you worked through them with your supplier and kept at it and I think we would all agree it came out sweet. Especially on the long wall that I would venture to say is the toughest spot to blend. So exposed and out there visually.
With that said, I have been thinking that my SWR bus would be an easier color to work within I found out it is not as easy as I would have initially thought. I've been watching this build and Burlyhammers SWR build and actually afraid to open up the updates and see you guys breeze through the projects while I falter. I admit I took a little comfort in your admission that the SWR color is a tough one to deal with as well.
I will give a little back story without hijacking, so no pictures of mine here, but I started cutting out the rust on my patina 65 over New Years break this year and had slowly and methodically replaced the sections with funky green and around July was finished with the filler and prep. I had a flawless application of grey primer and all was going well. When I shot he paint, it was just not the right color. A kind of rose color with a clay terra cotta look to it. It was just all wrong.
In hind sight, I realize that the pieces I had cut off the bus and taken into to be read had a film of oxidization and the reader must have picked up some of that. We all said it was just too far off to live with and decided to go for a second attempt. I also believe I had polished the paint on the long wall simply wiping it down each time I cleaned up between filler sand sessions, changing the look and removing the oxidization as well, which really brought out the red in the paint.
So my paint shop has some great guys and its a decent size company that has stores all over the state. They said they had a dif type of paint reader getting shipped from Sioux Falls and that they would like to try that reading directly on the bus along the long wall where I'm blending. If you look close, the paint changes ever so slightly from the belt line to the rocker, with a bit of primer showing at the top and having thicker paint lower. Likely from its exposure to the elements and how that played out on the curvature. Sounded good to me, and right around then I had to bail on the project to work the 3-4 weeks of Sturgis bike week, so I said take your time. They had fits getting the reader to work, it is a remote handheld deal that talks to a tablet and needs wifi to work and there was def a learning curve, but after a few days they said I had some paint to pick up. They were really into my project and super cool to have support like this.
Anyway, I sanded it all down and remasked the project and got it shot last night. Looks killer. Well worth the second effort. The break did me some good too and I'm back to staring at this bus and amazed at how cool it is and loving it. I have to say, all of these projects have steps that can take me few times to master but it pays to not get frustrated and keep hammering and not cut corners. I always joke that my next bus will be better, but it's true. At least I'll have some experience and some tricks. These things are quite a challenge and I appreciate the roadmap you and others have left for me to follow. |
