Hmmm, so according to some of the "read these first" posts on this site, 63-67 use the same front seat. Since this is earlier as you suggest, does that mean I have a front seat that's not correct for my 65'? I still haven't been able to find a thread that details seat frame distinctions between 63-67 and earlier front seats. |
I might have confused you, I mean "sewn" seams were used on 63 and earlier seats. 64-67 are heat-seamed.
63-67 are the same driver's seat frame so you are set if you want to recover it.
It's the same driver's seat frame for both Bench and walk-thru Buses too, for those years
(Some people think they are different) |
Thanks EverettB. Just to clarify, what year range does the seat base/hardware cover (excluding differences in upholstery). _________________ 16 9

The bare seat frame? 1963-67 are the same. _________________ How to Post Photos

Pretty slow-going, but some forward progress. Bus is in the queue for some light metal restoration at Silver Lining Restoration. Scope is pretty limited...just cargo-side inner/outer rocker and adjacent floor section and a few other small areas. The driver side door had some bondo and needs some repair, so a faux patina color match is in order to match the rest of the OG paint. I couldn't find an OG SWR door that looked OK...maybe a future purchase, but this will work for now. Metal ordered, so I'm hoping to get the bus back soon!
Meanwhile, I've got the original red house paint-over-Dove-blue safaris stripped, parts ordered and will be painting them up this week and reassembling. Pop outs are next.
My bus was missing the rear seat (it has the original middle) but I managed to find a nice SB/BG example locally. Will be swapping these covers out for new material. I appreciate the preservation movement on interior stuff, but I decided to go new reproduction on the interior. My bus came with all the panels, but they had been recovered at some point so my starting point on an OG interior is effectively nothing.

OK, finally have a real update. As mentioned earlier in the thread, Silver Lining Restoration is handling the metal work for this bus. Morrie has been great and has provided extensive updates.
Morrie and looked over my bus and came up with a good plan. I wanted a failry light touch, opting for patching repairs in some areas and new or donor metal in more extensively rusted areas. Emphasis is to preserve and blend with less regard to making repairs applicable to a full restoration at a later date. Here we go...
Starting on the A pillar on LH side.
And RH side floor.
All patched and ground down.
Same on the LH side, Even repaired the seal track.

Cargo floor up next...
Taking off the rusted cargo rocker.
Found more rust on the B pillar but will just patch it up.
Cutting off the top inner rocker to replace just the top.
Top half is replaced and didn’t need to take that out as well.
Starting to line up the out cargo rocker.
Just going to replace the floor back to the well tub.
…. to the front bench wall.
Prepping it to weld in.
Cleaning up the inner belly pan area and the top I beams to weld the floor section in.

Going to line up the doors to make sure we're good as we can get on gaps.
Needs some TLC.
Picked up the door.
Got the cargo door lines to match up better.
Everything looks good and next step is to weld in the cargo rocker.
Patching out the B pillar.
Welded in the floor section and grounding all the welds down.
Last few to go.
We though the rust was limited in this area, but of course it grew...
Welded and ground down the bottom lip as well. The lip on the edge was long for some reason it was trimmed down. The next pictures will show what I am talking about.
You can see it's long so it will be trimmed like the above picture.

Onto the cargo door bottoms.
Wired wheeled the rust down and will POR-15 the backs before putting the new panel in.
Cut and prepped the new inner panel.
Starting to lay POR-15.
POR-15 applied and the cargo doors are welded in and ground down.
Welding in the front cargo door bottom.
Welded and ground down.
Of course the doors don’t close so the floor plates have to be adjusted. Morrie says that they do this on every bus now days. The stamping are off.
Tacked in and lined up.
Now it closes where it needs to and is straight on the outside of the bus...
...as seen here.
Cargo doors, rocker, and floor are done. Still need to weld in the seat brackets.

Now, on to the one dumb thing I did when I got the bus. At the time, I was driving around the family's 78' Bay. It has that sweet engine access panel that the engineers surely overlooked on the previous generation of buses. It was all too tempting, so this happened... Hey, I was 18!
Here is the donor piece. Morrie had one in the sell pile and made me a nice deal on it, despite ruining the entire tray.
All cut, trimmed, tacked, welded, and ground down. Now I can forget about it!
This dogleg missed the first inspection.
Started opening it up and as usual the area starts growing. Familiar narrative?
From here we have good enough metal to weld it back together.
Finished, and looks great.
A few pin holes in the driver front floor that will get welded up and ground down.
I wavered on this repair a bit. I think I'm just going to wire wheel it and POR-15 for now. Thoughts?

Thanks guys!
Starting on the rear bumper. The bumper was actually creased so it had to be spread back out first then welded up.
All finished and ground down.
The other area that was cut.
Here it is all straight and welded up. Will need new brackets as these ones are messed up.
Going to put the seat bracket mounts in.
Starting to go in.
All welded in and ground down. Just need to put the plate in.
Plate is in and all finished.
Here we go on the benchwall. This is another area I wavered on fixing, but I'm glad we addressed it.
Once hit with a wire wheel it just keep going so it got cut out.
Here is the donor piece that will be modified to fit the front cargo area.
Beating the front area straight to match.
All hammered out and cut to make to make it look original.
Getting tacked in.
All welded up.
Ground down and looks great. Happy.

The original driver door had some damage and filler. Initially, we were planning on using a spare I had picked up years ago, but we went back to the original door for the OG beige gray paint and interior side paint. Plan is to strip the respray and repair it as needed to match the OG SWR.
You can see it needs TLC in the hinge as well.
Starting the repairs.
Door needs to go over to the back of the bus so we need to take off the bumpers to line them up.
So as the door open it drops off the pin...
...it's sagging.
After a few more adjustments …
...door lines are better and the door and closes without it sticking.
That's it for now. Next update might be some shining OG paint! _________________ 16 9

Yes nice repairs. Have the guy fix the old bumper mounting brackets. It looks like he'd know how. |

Hey everyone. I have a nice update coming with a ton of pics, but here's a few teasers. The OG paint buffed out sweet and the limited repair/blending integrates great! When I rolled up to Silver Lining Restoration yesterday, I thought that Morrie had mistakenly done a rotisserie full resto!
All original paint in this view except for rocker and lower cargo door blending.
All original here...
SWR respray/blend on driver door and lower dog leg panel (original door had a repair and old respray). Everything else on this side OG with original rocker.
SWR and left side B/G original. Upper section below driver window blended. (really happy with how it matches the passenger side area!)
When I have a moment I'll upload a full report. I'm stoked! Thx for looking. _________________ 16 9
