About 55,000 (compared to about 650,000 Jeeps). _________________ We are striving for perfection, to make our cars run forever, if possible.

Here are three more interesting captured Schwimmwagens.
The first is being used as an ambulance.
This tidy Schwimmer named "Bad Bastard" features a welded on front protection bar. These were added to Jeeps in Normandy
to avoid decapitation as a result of razor wire being strung across the roads.
Finally, Polish forces nicknamed this Schwimmer the "Santa Maria," after Christopher Columbus' ship.

U.S. officials examine a captured Kubelwagen that came into allied possession in North Africa early in the war.
It was transported to Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland where it was subjected to numerous tests to develop data
for a technical manual to be distributed to U.S. troops at the front. The manual, titled The German Volkswagen, was
published by the War Department on D-Day, 1944.

In an attempt to try and bring this string of military photos to a close, I'll end for now with another snapshot of a
captured Kubel, taken by a G.I. who identifies his buddies in the photo.

The hat is a hunter's hat.
The bike is a Moped, a small bike with 50cc engine.

Great pictures as always Blue Baron. With the large amount of pictures taken with confiscated German vehicles it surprises me that still not any picture of the confiscated Type 60k10 in Austria (with or withour roof...) has shown up here. |

Oops. That's what happens when you make assumptions. I should have posed it as a question. Thanks for the clarification.
Hopefully I can come closer on my next photo. _________________ We are striving for perfection, to make our cars run forever, if possible.

Hopefully I can get back on track with this piece of history. The experts are invited to chime in.
Here Dr. Porsche describes a model of the Volkstractor to Der Fuhrer and his entourage. Hitler had decreed that
every German would own either a peoples car or a peoples tractor. The tractor would be built at the KdF factory,
and be one of the main products there. The tractor never entered production.
After the war, when Heinz Nordhoff and British officials met with the Porsches to iron out a new contract for use
of their intellectual property, they were surprised to find out that VW still held the rights to the Volkstractor.
As VW was only interested in building cars, they passed on the tractor, and the Porsche firm eventually produced
a similar vehicle itself. _________________ We are striving for perfection, to make our cars run forever, if possible.
