i have a stock 56 bug. 36 hp. 28 pict solex carb. vjur bosch dist with vacuum advance. i have read and watched some videos about setting timing by finding the notches on back of pulley then using a test light to find the first firing place on the distributor. i have two notches on the back of pulley. which position should the rotor be facing? i have heard conflicting answers. i know i can pull the spark plug on #1 to find highest point of piston and then see where the pulley is, but i do not know how this ties in with every thing else. car ran last night but not today. i set pulley to first notch and line in case. i must be missing something rather simple. 1-4-3-2

This photo from the 1956 Owner's Manual gives you an idea of where the rotor points when you are at #1 and how to set the timing:

A 36hp engine normally has a pulley with ONE timing mark, which is 7.5 degrees BTDC.
If you have 2 marks, it might be best to post a photo of the pulley so people can identify it and tell you what the marks might be on your pulley.
There is a good chance it's 7.5 BTDC and 10 BTDC

1-4-3-2 is the correct sequence on the cap.
Not a 36hp but same idea
