I have an ‘86 VW Cabriolet. It has had intermittent problems running. A knowledgeable mechanic has isolated the issue to the fuel Pressure Regulator. I can’t locate one anywhere. Does anyone have any advice on new places for me to look? |

An 86 is cis, it doesnt have what you would consider a traditional regulator. There is a warmup regulator, and the main unit itself. Find out what part he is refering to, also find out what the fuel pressures were tested at. High pressure leads to a lean condition, opposite of traditional efi. _________________ There are no stupid questions, only stupid people,

It's called a Control Pressure Regulator and it's on the front side of the engine block to the right of the oil filter. All it does is regulate the pressure to the Fuel Distributor. Specifically, the fuel pressure related to the operation of the central spool valve within the fuel distributor. There are two working pressures to be concerned with, system pressure and control pressure. You need a special test appliance to do the diagnostics. A regular fuel injection test gauge is not sufficient to do the work. _________________ '69 Karmy, '69 Camper, Meyers clone, '65 drag bug, 10.78 @ 128 (sold it) '51 Dodge farm truck,

I would ask your mechanic. If he cannot get one from his supplier, he should be able to give you the part number.
The fuel pressure regulator is part of the fuel distributor and can be removed/replaced if required. I suspect there are other issues since I've not seen one go bad in the 35+ years working with CIS. Sure, it could be damaged by rust, but that's not the regulators fault
As others have mentioned, the warm up/control pressure regulator could be the problem too but that is not what your mechanic stated.

You can take them apart and clean. Usually have to remove the little screen filter too. Just pay attention to how it comes apart. |

The reason they stop working is due to getting stopped up with dirt and rust. |
