Been busy trying to get this thing running. I haven't checked the inspection covers too closely and it's back to work today after three weeks vacation so time on the bug will be limited.
I did sneak it out for a quick drive down the street. Idles fine and pulled well in first until I shifted to second and it just bucked and had no power. I think I'm going to have to pull the carb and rebuild it. Backing out the idle jet slightly allowed me to get a decent idle but obviously didn't help with this other issue. I think it is fuel related. Can anyone tell from this picture if something isn't hooked up correctly. This car ran oerfectly when parked six years ago. Should it have a fuel filter or is it built into fuel pump?
Also spent some time polishing the roof just to see if I can bring the paint back.

Sounds very much like debris in the fuel system. There is (should be) a copper filter screen in the tank. I don't think that fuel pump has a plastic screen in it; I can't tell if it has a hex on the side facing the drive belt. If so, there's a conical plastic screen in there (that's the way it is on a '67 FP, which looks very similar to yours, but with the hex filter screen cover). But I cannot see behind your vacuum line. If it doesn't have the hex cover, then yours likely doesn't have a screen. In '65 the pump is slightly different - at least on mine, and it has a flat plastic screen inside the FP. But you can still get fine particulates past them. May folks put an inline fuel filter between the fuel pump discharge and carb intake but it hangs directly over the distributor. Not good. Before rebuilding the carb, you should clean out the fuel system. Pull the tank and clean it. Replace the copper filter screen. Remove the fuel pump, disassemble and thoroughly clean it. Install new diaphragm and screen from WW. Before reinstalling the FP, flush out the fuel line from the front of the car to the back. I have used a jar to collect the fuel as it comes out to see any debris that may be discharging. Do this until it runs out free of particulates. Then find a suitable place under the car to install an inline fuel filter. Now you're ready to attack the carb because you have eliminated any contaminant issue PRIOR to the carb _________________ -Kent (BaT "daleallen")

Finally got around to pulling the tank. It's unfortunately got some surface rust inside. I'm working on cleaning that up now. Have a gallon of evaporust in the tank. Swishing it around every hour or so. Cleaning it up well.
Also got the horn working again. Why the vw horns have to be so complicated I'll never understand. Turns out I spent an hour or so cleaning grounds checking the horn button, the horn itself and finally realized that while the tab at bottom of steering column was clean between it and the coloumn itself was rusty. Cleaned that up. Added some solder to help and all is well.

By '64, VW made the horn system much less complicated. Try diagnosing a 1960!
Nice to see you making progress! A concern though... depending on how much rust is in the tank. It may be best to go ahead and reline the tank to ensure that no bits will continue to flake off and goober up you fuel system. There are a few very good products to accomplish this. _________________ -Kent (BaT "daleallen")

Here is a picture of the cleaned and rebuilt carb. Hoping it runs as well as it looks. I also removed that funky what i am assuming is a pollution piece on front of carb.
I noticed the fuel cut off solenoid had the end cut off. Is that because this carb and motor is from a 12 volt car? Will the electric choke still work on six volts?

The electric solenoid probably failed so they cut the end off so the car would still run.
If it's 6v maybe it burned up...
It should "click" when it gets power.
Turn the key on and unhook the wire to it, then re-attach it.
No click = it's bad
If you have a 12v choke you want to find a 6v one.
You are correct they are the same size for that carb. _________________ How to Post Photos

Thanks for checking in. I've been meaning to post an update. Was a busy and long winter as you know. After rebuilding the carburetor it was still down on power. I did a compression test and the number 1 cylinder was at 50 psi. I pulled the motor and have been slowly doing a top end rebuild with new heads, pistons and cylinders. It has taken a couple of months of one hour here and one hour there. I figure another weekend or two and I'll have it back in the car. Both my boys play competitive basketball and I coach so I had little to no time in the garage over the winter. I'll post pictures later.

Got the motor back in. Still not running right. Flat spot hesitation. Timing, valves and points are good. Fuel filter is clean. Had to step away from it so decided to some welding. Been a year or two since I had the welder out so took some practice. Welds are not the prettiest but solid. Also can’t find a rear drivers fender. Been watching the classifieds and nothing has come up in ruby red. May have to get one and paint it. Does anyone have any leads? Will pay extra for ruby red.
