So I've got all of the parts to swap over to 944 suspension/brakes along with a 901 transmission. The only piece of the puzzle that I dont have are wheels.

I've found some Porsche Cayenne wheels, but they are 18 x8 et 53.
Based on this comparison calculator they should fit, right? Or will this be too close to interfere with the strut or spring plate? There is a guy in the classifieds that widens stock wheels to as wide as 8", but maybe the offset is different, I don't know. Anyone have input and/or experience with this?

Also, I'm willing to do wider rear fenders (and wheel spacers/adapters) if needed, I'd just prefer to stick with the stock fender width up front.

Your calculations indicate the front wheels will move outwards over an 1”. I can’t speak to any clearance issue regarding struts or springs but with a et of 53mm you may need some type of Porsche wheel spacer to gain clearance on the inside which would only exacerbate outer clearance issues between your tires and fenders.
Stock front fenders and 8” wide wheels will not work unless the wheels bolt directly to the 944 hubs without the need for a spacer to clear struts. And if you can get away without a large wheel spacer then you will surely run into turning issues with the insides of your tires contacting the inner wheel well. Basically a normal Uturn becomes a 3 point turn.

It can be done, but you might need aftermarket struts and the right wheel offset.
