My guess is it the same as the rare white bakelite speedo pod, although white dome lights are not all that rare. I think VW figured out that it was more effective to just have brown and paint them for deluxes, same with the pods. The white pods were notorious for spider-cracking, the white dome lights not so much. My guess is that white dome lights were early deluxes, and painted white brown ones used later...

Just a theory.

Perhaps the white bakelite era was late '49, early '50 when the deluxes first came out. Probably didn't last all that long. The white speedo pads are really cool, I've seen quite a few but never an uncracked one....

My guess would be almost 1949 only, maybe early 1950.
I have all white unpainted pods for my Heb.

They are cool, but quite "sensible". Both have one crack just in the material.

I guess this white bakelite was just more expensive and difficult to produce, compared to white painted black ones. So VW soon changed to that.

it is a real problem to make a flawless ivory "bakelite" piece (as a matter of fact not bakelite though) , since any dust , contaminated or humid material would be visible on the finish , brown or black bakelite is much better , since flaws can`t be seen .....

i do discard almost a 30% of each window winder knob`s production for small spots , cracks and black dots on the finished parts ....

i can make brown , black or ivory (this last , painted) interior light units, check my ads

I have this 6.51 clock with an all ivory pod, would they be correct together?

I agree to John (johnshenry) and Carsten (usariemen) who expressed the opinion, that homogenious white pods finished early 1950, I´d say April 1950. Such the combination Kai is showing is not a correct fit, the clock in the all white pod is too "new". The correct clock has even a different rear housing, here is a pic of 1949 split deluxe/convertible pods:
