In the opening sequence of this vid, the guy pulls all three knobs; isn't that kinda self defeating? The center knob decouples the front and rear diffs, so when he locks the front, does that do anything positive for offroading?

Depends on how you have it setup, it can be either pull for decouple, or pull to couple. It's just a matter of which vac line goes on which nipple, so most likely he has his setup so all knobs in is 2wd.

There was a later tin-top Vanagon crushed under a pile of cars in a junkyard on last week's episode of Castle Rock.
It was pretty intact, too. The show is apparently shot in Orange, Mass, so if you're looking for parts...

While I was watching PBS last night they repeated a Rick Steves travelogue on Germany's Rhine, Mosel and the city of Rothenburg, where I spotted a familiar shape. I did not get the camera out quickly enough but looked it up on YouTube and here it is. I've been to that town but was touring on a bicycle and my trip predated Vanagons.
