Did some more tinkering, found rust break through from the front trunk to passenger side under dash. Yikes! 🤮
Cleaned gas tank in and out, touched up the paint where needed.
Trunk liner was cleaned and straightened out.
All the other bits like brackets to hold the tank, clamps, brake fluid reservoir were cleaned up etc... I put it all back in temporarily. When I get to the brakes I will clean up all the hard lines and what not. Also want to get a good look at the steering box. I’m not done in there by any stretch.
Question. If I want it to be a drivable work in progress, what is the best temporary solution for the rust in the front trunk. The plan is to repair it right. Should I just be patient and hold off until I just patch it up in there, as the gas tank etc is already pretty much out? Am I overthinking it, and I should just get rolling with nothing there but nasty holes. New Mexico is a dry state and I can and have kept it undercover and dry.
Secondly I have a rear fender with damage that is coming up on my list to fix. Any advice on that? I have a hammer and dolly set.. I’ve just never used it. I’m new to body work, hell I’m still on a hardcore learning curve with everything. Seems like a hard area to get right because of the light and reflector placement.
I also got an extra set of gauges and cleaned them up and plated the bezels. Still lots of pitting in them as the rust was bad but they look a lot better. I may use the speedo, as mine is missing the needle. Anyone have a spare speedo needle? I’d rather keep what came with the car.
I appreciate any and all advice.

I'd just use the spare speedo you have. Trying to get a new needle, and placed in the right place will probably require a speedo repair shop to set it correctly (and calibrate it).

That rear fender has definitely seen better days. You might want to look for another one. I say that, as you'll need to remove it in order to fix it correctly. Plus, there might be some hidden damage behind it.

As for the rust thru, you could use some aluminum duct tape as a temp fix, then when you have time (and the inside gutted) fix it correctly (weld in a patch).

Thanks Bob, I will probably do that.

That aluminum duct tape is quite the secret weapon. Aside from all the other ramndom applications I e found for it, I patched the inside tears of my engine lid with it, and it was the first thing I thought of using for these holes.

Yeah, I've found a few uses for it over the years too. In the fall, I use it to cover the fresh air vent grill at the base of the windshield to keep the leaves and crap from collecting inside the fresh air box.

This is the emergency flasher switch in my squareback. I am assuming it isn’t stock, but thought I’d ask anyway. It’s kinda strange.

It was an upgrade available to European car owners through accessory shops, as 4 way flashers weren't mandated in Europe yet. Definitely NOT JC Whitney, but not "stock", either.

Thank you Tram. Good to know. If it’s working when I get it running. I think I’ll leave it. If it ain’t broke.....
Although I’m not too fond of the big red erect dog penis knob I’d be pulling on in case of an emergency. 😄 🐩

Had some unusual heavy rain in Albuquerque recently. I thought I had the square better covered....I was wrong. The water finds a way. It saturated the carpet, which I thought I was going to save. Truth is they were dry rotted, they smelled and getting the floors dry just makes for a good opportunity to do the floors the right way. There was a huge rats nest under the passenger foot plate. I wish I took a picture of that, as it was a fine piece of mammalian construction and a good place to do it....for a rat. I was dismayed to find a few holes in the rear passenger floor. Not too bad though, but still a drag as I thought it wouldn’t.
