Im beginning my top end 1641 kit rebuild.
What do i need to do it right?
Lube? Grease? Sealer? Silicone?

You'll need motor oil to lubricate the pistons and rings, Permatex 2 or Curil T for various gaskets and an RTV for the cylinder bases (I like Permatex ultra grey). The critical thing with RTV is if a little is good alot is not better, just a paper thin smear is all you need, too much and the excess squeezes out and the chunks block oil passages.
Do you have the Tom Wilson "how to rebuild your VW engine" book?, or a Bentley manual?, or Muir's "idiot" book?

Good point, more essentials are valve lapping compound, solvent and a place to wash parts (oil drain pan?), a torque wrench and a ring compressor.
