Did all three trans mounts, removed the straps, put in a new bowden tube, and installed a rotary fuel pump. Then scrubbed the engine compartment. Someone in the past had painted over dirt. Ugh.
Tomorrow I'll put the finishing touches on the 1835 and get it mounted up. _________________ No boom today. Boom tomorrow. There's always a boom tomorrow. |

I hit 80+ mph today! With a passenger in the car. Old girl's still got it I guess! I think it could go about 85, because it was still accelerating. That isn't bad for a stock motor. _________________ Daily driven....Slowly. |

With the front suspension almost done, attention will turn to the IRS. FedEx brought a box of Sway-A-Way goodness today.

Best kind of problem!!
I changed the oil and drain plate gaskets today- car seems to have lost the valve "chatter" I had been experiencing since I last adjusted my valves. Drove to work this evening-- nice and smooth! _________________ I'm the humblest guy on this board.

Cranked the new engine to check for oil pressure. Light went out. WOOT!
Discovered that the crank pulley was rubbing on the oil pump cover bolts. Swapped for a power pulley for now.
Discovered that I screwed up the distributor installation. Tried to get the drive gear out. I have no idea how it just fell in, but is too big to get out. Sigh.
I left it there for now. I'm going to rearrange the plug wires and mark a new #1 on the distributor when I can stomach it.

Fixed a 'weeping' front brake hose, bled the brakes, and adjusted the shoes.
Replaced the speedo cable, then discovered the source of a substantial bit of road noise.
I think my driver's front outer bearing might have been shot....
just maybe that was the noise
Funniest thing was the outer race was german, but the bearing was Japanese...... Guess the PO decided to re-use and mix parts _________________ 1973 Standard Beetle

I would never ever admit to doing that. (Bearing shot, race still looked ok, didn't have a press or any way to replace the race, so ... ) _________________ No boom today. Boom tomorrow. There's always a boom tomorrow. |

Clearly the previous owner/mechanic saw no value in replacing bearings and races as a set. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

I changed the oil in my 69 a couple days ago without replacing the oil in the air cleaner and cleaning the top portion so I took care of that today.
No wonder VW went to paper filters eventually-- what a mess cleaning that oil bath cleaner makes. No one should have to go through that sort of trouble. _________________ I'm the humblest guy on this board.

By no means should anyone take any of that personally, if the race is good- I can see the benefit or advantage of getting a good bearing in there, but I don't think he looked at the outer race when doing so.
because....that re-used outer race probably caused the new bearing to end up like that so soon.
Couldn't get a good pic of it to show, but the outer race looked like the surface of the moon Nothing but pits and divots. _________________ 1973 Standard Beetle

Installed a new thermostat that Zunde was kind enough to give me after my last one apparently failed due to the pushrod ganging up on the cylinder head tunnel...
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=...mp;start=0
We'll see how this one does, going to have to keep a close eye on it for awhile as if the pushrod can't move upward, the flaps can't open for cooling air!! _________________ I'm the humblest guy on this board.
