Was hoping it was the engine for my car.
Here is some info from 356A.com

I've been looking at all the various repair manuals on Amazon, and a lot of reviews are less than stellar. Anyone have a suggestion for a good repair manual that will cover more than just the basics like how to split the case or adjust the valves? |

Try Amazon for Handbook and service manual for Porsche 912 by Floyd Clymer will do the trick, if they have a 356 even better but they are basically the same motor. |

I have the Harry Pella tapes if you have a VCR and a lot of time to watch them. _________________ 1960 Beetle And 1679cc DP W-100 & Dual Zeniths! |

The tapes offer a lot of verbal info but the photography is not close enough to make them that much of a visual aid and you have to watch for hours to get through them. The Secret sauce is interesting! _________________ 1960 Beetle And 1679cc DP W-100 & Dual Zeniths! |

Really, the problem is suggesting the name "Pella". That's a window company. Not much use for Porsche engines at all. The proper connection is "Pellow" an author of 356 renoun. Some folks believe it is fairly important to use accurate nomenclature when giving advice. Others think haphazard info is wonderful. I don't. _________________ Jack Staggs

Thank you! I know the the 912 and 356 share the same basic flat-4 design, but I'd always thought they had different components, (heads, carbs, distributor, etc.?) |

I'm a nomenclature fanatic myself. I've heard good things about the Pellow fellow. |

That is a 64 SC engine, fan shroud looks to be the wrong colour - should be black, they were grey on the C version. The engines are similar to a 912, however the rear (third piece) of the enging case uses different counter sunk bolts, it also has a blanking plate over the oil pump as the 912 has an electronic Taco, where as all but the last few 356's had a mechanical cable driven tacho that connected to a drive on the oil pump cover.
The SC has a counter weighted crank which runs smoothly - though not quite as revy as it's carrying the counter weights.
356 engines a expensive bugger to build, what ever it costs on a beetle stick a zero on the end and that's what it costs on a 356. main bearings are a fortune, valves are too. the followers are invariably in need to a re face. There some good alternatives to original Mahle piston and barrels ( which cost an absolute fortune) the Shasta product is very good an basically gives you modern engineering capabilities on a 60's engine.
Throw the con rod's away - they are dreadful by modern standards and liable to let you down, run Carello rods instead.
OK I've waffled on enough!!! good luck - do it right and you'll have a great little engine |

C rods are fine for normal driving. B and A rods are weak.
Agree with everything else. Even a low budget build is going to cost you a lot, and pray the crank is good. An AA crank alone is near $1000. Rebuilt Solex carbs $1500 if you have cores. Rebuilt 018 about $450 if you have a core, etc. if you heads are cracked, oh boy...
I always tell guys with these engines and without a car to sell them and take the money and build a higher HP VW engine for half the costs. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

Yes you're right that the c rods are better but I still don't trust them - I've got a the remains of a broken case in my garage with a rod shapped hole in it
Agree with what you're saying, 018's are expensive to rebuild , It looked like the carbs were missing in the picture so they are costly to replace and rebuild.
I did read about an ex military guy in the staes who built Type 4 engines as a good alternative for a 356. You get 2.ltr plus more horse than the Carrera engines put out. I know the purists will be saying it's criminal but you know what, I've often thought that on longer trips i should take my matching number 356c engine out, put it in a dry safe place in the garage, then try the Type 4 route so that I can thrash the nuts out of it without fear of an expensive episode |

I've actually been working a ton and haven't had time to post, but in the last few months I've had help from a few friends in the Porsche community and rebuilt my entire block. new bearings, new seals, had the crank checked and balanced, bought new pistons and cylinders, and had a friend who's a pro photographer come by to take some photos. I literally think I just invented "engine porn"...

I still have the old heads, dist, oiler, generator, header, and cooler, all rebuilt. But I have to be honest, I'm VERY much leaning toward selling my sweet new 356 engine and getting in on a 914 project.

I kinda think I'll blow up a few of these photos poster sized to hang in my shop and move on. It was an amazing experience to bring this beautiful machine back from the dead, but I just don't have the funds to find it a good 356 chassis.
The reward for me was meeting great mechanics, and having a piece of Porsche history in my shop. |

You could put it in a 356 kit car. |

I can't do it. As much as I love the idea of one of those coupe reproductions with a nicely rebuilt SC engine, I'm even more obsessed with turbocharging a 914. |

Looking good. Friend of mine from So Cal just transferred to Eugene and bought a house in Florence on the coast up there. |
