It appears at some point the instrument cluster has been fiddled with... I'm guessing the speedometer was replaced with that of an older Vanagon. The foil connector that connects to the back of the speedometer on some clusters is just dangling.
1. I have no idea how many miles are on my Vanagon - this is not cool.
2. When was this speedometer used in Vanagons?
3. Is it worth trying to find a different speedometer?

Looks like someone tampered with the dynamic oil pressure circuit. Maybe the buzzer was going off all of the time. I would check the oil pressure switches, the cabling in the engine compartment and reconnect the connector to the pins of the little pcb under the speedo. |
the speedo does not have a connector... thus the reason this a dangling. _________________ 1991 Vanagon GL Camper

With that unplugged your van has NO OIL LIGHT unless someone did something else to allow the oil light to still function.
You should make sure you have a working oil warning light.

The face of the speedometer is labelled 805 so i know it's not from a syncro - it appears to be an 83-85 model since it lacks the oil pressure circuit connector.

that is a speedo from an air cooled van.
all speedos are clearly date stamped. i can almost make it out in the bottom pic in the OP.
you should get the right one and have a functioning oil pressure warning system. _________________ 88 Van WBX, A/T - 13 JSW TDI 6M/T - 2012 Touareg TDI Sport |

Older vans had a screw on speedometer. My 81 had a screw on speedo and my current 85 has the same version you show (push on). I bought a newer one a few months back but was never able to make it work. Between the diff speedo connector and the buzzer and the rearranged 14pin it was too much work for very little bang.
Ive never seen brown foil. Is that even a bus connector? _________________ Support Small Business.

85 vans don't need the wires on the 14 pin moved for later clusters or any tach cluster to work.
80-84 use one 14 pin layout.
85-91 use another 14 pin layout.
84 Wolfy vans came with a tach and use the 85+ 14 pin layout.
86+ 14 pin uses an extra wire for a 2nd oil switch, simple to work around if needed.
Different year tachs sometimes don't work with other year vans, the tachs have different electronics in them.
The brown foil is just the back side of the blue foil.
