Small update today, I cleaned out the pushrod tubes and got them ready to be installed.
I had them soaking in diesel for a while, and brass brushed most of the rust away, then bathed them in thinners, and brake cleaner. I also extended the accordion ends, so nothing that might have gotten in there out. They came out alright. So, I'll be reusing them. Before I packed them away, I soaked the inside with oil, and the outside with Gibbs to prevent any more rust.
Now, I had a question about the wrist pins. I did the same with my set of pins, and the dark lines still remain, and I can feel a divot when I run my finger over them. Are these reusable? I'd hate to have to buy a whole new piston set after putting this much effort into this one.
Until then, time for pics. I didn't take many as it was a bunch of cleaning, and that's mundane.
Before and after

Nice work. But, you don't have to stretch those PRod tubes out that far. Just a little wiggle, out a couple of mm will be sufficient.

Fear not, this project and I are both still alive, and that's not going to change anytime soon. This might not be the summer, as I am still poor, but one day she will taste the road again.
Anyway, I actually have a real update for once; I have installed the cylinder heads! I started yesterday. However, I only installed one piston and cylinder before I had to go back inside, as it quickly reached 100F in my garage. That's been the other limiting factor other than money. It's just too hot out. Luckily, I found an old desk fan that made today bearable, but it wouldn't have made any difference the day before. I was dripping sweat by the time I finished up, which was also a factor in why I had to stop when I did. I really don't want to get sweat inside this thing. Luckily, the insides of the engine did just fine, and after some gentle turning, and some strategically placed oil with my oil can gun thing, I found that nothing has seized up or anything awful like that.
I installed the pushrod tubes with sealant. I installed the cylinder head bolts and washers with the closest thing I could find to high temperature silicone sealant and copper anti seize. Both products I used had stellar reviews on Amazon, and is supposed to do everything I need it to do, so I feel like I made the correct choice.
Beside that, I removed the flywheel. I put down Gibbs on the crankcase behind it, and then installed the Crankshaft seal. I also replaced the gasket that was on the crankshaft with a new one from the second gasket set that I had to buy a while ago. I put some loctite on the gland nut, and put it back together.
Next time should be the rocker arms, once I get the pushrods sorted out. That might be a while, because either if I have to replace them or decide to refurbish the ones I have, will require money, which is just something I don't have to spare right now.
Here's some pictures.
I don't need no oven cleaner
That's all from yesterday, the rest of the pictures are from today. I took a lot of photos, but will only upload a few, as most of them are just the same thing, but on a different cylinder and piston.
Finally, the shots you've been waiting for:
Until next time. _________________ 57' Beetle

Thank you.
I have a small update, but an important one.
Do you remember the fuel pump? This guy?
Here it is now.
I got the idea to put a razor blade into some vice grips to use as a handle. I don't have the cash to go out and buy a fancy razor blade handle. On the fuel pump, there was a place where the gasket sinks into the fuel pump, leaving a very small gap between the two surfaces. Gently, I dug the razor blade into the gasket, little at a time, until I got enough space to fit one of my small screw drivers. Angling it directly at the gasket, I gave it a gentle tap with my smallest hammer, and it came apart.
Unfortunately, this did dig into the mating surfaces, but not deeply.
Recalling what I learned from the oil pump, I dug out the piece of tile, and my 400, 600, and 2000 grit sandpaper.
After some wet sanding, I was left with this.
After blasting it with brake clean. I dissassembled the top half,
and then put it all into diesel to clean further.
I have a rebuild kit that's been waiting for years for this. I'll update again when I finish the rebuild. _________________ 57' Beetle

I wanted to get this finished yesterday, but my washing machine broke, so I had to focus my efforts on getting that running again.
Before assembling the pump, I did the same granite tile method to the flange of the pump.
I cleaned up the engine tin that goes under the fuel pump. It's glossy because I just sprayed it down with Gibbs before taking this picture. I wiped it down before installation.
Ready to assemble!
After making a crude guide preload the gasket, I finished building the fuel pump.
Once that was done I packed the inside with grease,
Applied lube to the end of the pushrod going to the pump. Then installed the gaskets, with a light coating of engine sealant,
and finally offered the pump to the engine, and torqued it down. LT's thread, listed 10 N/m, which is roughly 7.5 ft/lbs.
That's the fuel pump finished. It came out great too. _________________ 57' Beetle

Oh man. I'm sorry to hear this.
I'm pretty new to the air cooled vw scene, but I've been following with interest and learning lots. I appreciate you (and others like you) taking the time to put it all out there for others learn and enjoy.
I hope things turn around for you.

Aw man, bummer... I've been really enjoying your build...
Though I do understand the pitfalls of undertakings as well. As well as sometimes shit just happens as well.
But kind of curious, if it has been in that shed for that many years... rather than abandoning it and throwing the towel in lock stock & barrel, why not just pack it up & bag & tag everything & keep it in the shed until a time comes when you can finish... Heck mine took me 6+ years before it ever even got on the road once & went thru plenty of spells when I just wanted to give up and at times didn't even want to look at for six months or a year even on numerous occasions just from personal situations around me.
But like I said too, I know how sometimes life just gets in the way of everything too... _________________ ::: Slowoval ::: LaDawri Sebring ::: '61 Creampuff ::: Dust Storm '66 ::: |

I was thinking of that. I've been trying to crunch numbers, and things should be better in the winter past January. Selling is a last resort that's been on my mind for months, even before the pump rebuild.
Aside from bagging and whatnot, whats the best way to help it survive? I tried bagging the engine before, and we saw how well that went. How can I preserve that?
I'll try anything. _________________ 57' Beetle

Ok,
I'm sorry about that. Things have been really stressful lately, and my nerves are wearing thin. I should be okay, but will have to shelve the project for a while.
I bagged some items, oiled up some parts, it's not all done yet. I used my oil gun to squirt fresh oil in the passages to the oil cooler, and gently turned the crank over with the park plugs removed to keep things in motion. I also filled it with oil to keep the insides from rotting. I taped up the holes on the engine and the oil cooler.
Not sure when I'll return, but I will. _________________ 57' Beetle

Jesus, it's been since September since I last updated.
Unfortunately, I don't have an update. I've faced only setback after setback since then with my own Daily Driver, up to and including replacing the head gasket. However, I just completed that repair and she's working great again.
I'm hoping to use my tax return to buy some parts and get back on the horse.
I'm going to have her taste the road again, I swear. _________________ 57' Beetle
