This story begins with a 912 that in reality was beyond help, a lop sided '66 swb that'd at some point taken a hit to the front left, and then subsequently left as a good host for bonfires on the hood and parts for others. Somewhat luckily she got rescued , sunburnt to a crisp and sporting a distinct lack of floor, ended up in the UK - looking even more lopsided than I'm sure she did and waiting her next fate.
Here she is as delivered.
And that Alabama tag
Upon arrival to the UK she was stripped and sent to a guy call Matt Smith who is more accustomed to resurrecting forgotten about barn doors dragged from swamps in Sweden than he is saving beyond help 912's. Luckily he likes a challenge, and on the jig she went and a lot of new metal was bought.
Luckily, perhaps, for her she has amazing sunburn and patina so she had to be saved.
In the UK our best option is Dansk kit, familiar to most I'm sure and a wife upsetting amount of panels were bought. Over the course of 3-4 weeks broken up by his other work Matt and his partner Bob set about creating a miracle.
As stated before, a lot of Dansk kit was bought, or if not available from them, restoration design and more often than not if impatience prevailed and they just had to crack on then panels were simply (I say this flippantly) made, most notably the heater channel tube that Bob made because, well because Bob.
Last week saw a turning point in her resurrection with a mock up of wheels (not sure what actual wheels I'll run) and solid belly for the first time in a while. This week Matt and Bob will finish a couple of jobs on the nose and get some raptor paint on the pan, inner hood, engine bay and wheel wells.
So in summary, anyone got any info on my Alabama survivor?

Nice save! Did she come with an engine?
You might want to try here for more info or advise www.912bbs.org. Very active forum and quite a few knowledgeable people.

you are an absolute hero for saving this car.
You can contact a title clerk in Alabama (tag and title service) and they can do the history on the car for you |

Thank you - I have now signed up. The engine and gearbox are long gone unfortunately. I don't even think the engine made it over the pond but I think I know were the box is.

Thanks for the info I'll give it a shot.
Hero Soft in the head is probably more appropriate but thanks.

Cheers, I wish I could lay claim for the metalwork but I'm so glad Matt and Bob took it on.
The first teaser pics of raptor I got filtered through earlier last week
And then more the following day when the underside raptor went on after the rear chassis rails were notched slightly to allow for lowering clearance of the drive shafts. Its funny that any attempt to hang her from the sway bar points a couple of months ago would have ended in the nose and the main body being two separate entities.
With the impending return of the shell I figured it was about time I pulled my finger out and got the suspension ready for blasting and powder coating and armed with a method of pulling the rear hubs off the trailing arms supplied by good ol' youtube I stole some box section from an unsuspecting mate and got to work.
In the end it took longer to make the puller than it did actually coax the two apart. Once inside I was greeted with more of the Alabama countryside.
Just what remains of the bushes to come out, and the bearings.
Speaking of which if theres any tips from removing said bearings - please stand up. _________________ 59 Kombi

Looking really nice.
Will you run a 912 motor?

No I won't be running a 912 motor - most likely a type 4. _________________ 59 Kombi

Any progress on this epic build?
By the way, I think it's an awesome achievement already... _________________ drive it like you just robbed the bank
