|

My neighbor has asked me to assemble the drivetrain for his Corrado VR6. The engine has been built out to 3.0L and has lots of internal mods intended for a turbo build. It was built by Jerry up at NW Connecting Rod. Anyway, I'm assembling and installing it as NA for now, but the neighbor wants to prep everything for the eventual turbo build.
My question for the group revolves around the clutch assembly. He brought me what looks to be a high performance clutch pressure plate and disc, the latter of which is a four puck. I've heard that those types of discs aren't intended for street use. He says he doesn't plan on daily driving the car, but I just want to be sure he's making the right choice for this build.
Any thoughts? _________________ Casey--

What are the pucks made out of? I have replaced clutches where they were using REALLY aggressive friction material & it destroyed the flywheel. Also, be wary of pressure plates with too much spring tension, the release arm is the weakest point in these high performance clutches. I replaced 4 in the same car in 6 months because of an overly aggressive pressure plate.
For the most part, a 228 clutch of good quality has more than enough clamping force to hold if the driver isn't a complete & total jackass. If you start applying loads of power before its completely engaged, you're gonna smoke a clutch. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

I know nothing about performance clutches. Here's a pic:
The pressure plate is stamped as a Luk. _________________ Casey--

Being a front wheel drive car, your average high performance disc and PP will do just fine. The front tires will lose grip way easier than what the clutch will hold. He'll need to go to some very sticky and wide tires to over come what the clutch will hold. |
