Greetings all,

Recently there have been a few posts in the forum about problems relating to the brake warning light. I was unable to help in those posts because I didn't understand what was going on inside that pesky brake warning light assembly. I became determined to unravel its mysteries. It was tough for me to figure out, so after I finally understood it I thought I should put together the info and share it. (Thanks to the previous work of Mr. Jim Mais, and also to forum member Mondshine for his invaluable assistance.)

BUT WAIT! DON'T DOWNLOAD THIS LOW RESOLUTION JPEG. Get a slick PDF version in the Technical Section.

A fine addition to the body of work done by the Captain.

I recommend the administrator link this piece to the wiring pages for the other VW types that also use this brake warning light.

Awesome! My system hasn't been working correctly, now I can dive in.

I was researching the light and was wondering if a bad brake switch is not making contact while pushing the brake would it also cause the light to turn on?

A faulty brake light switch that does not make electrical contact when the system is pressurized would have the same effect as a fluid loss in that circuit; so yes.

I’ve studied the circuit further and agree.

This would have helped me years ago when I was buying the $5 sensors. And they would go out about once a year. Haven’t had the problem since going to the German made sensors.
Thank you captain spaulding for explaining this circuit.
