I mean no offense to anybody with this. Wink

I may be stumbling into a complete but severely neglected 1971 Porsche 914. I'm told it is not seized. What I'm building is a sandrail buggy, and I'd be trying to use the 914 drivetrain in it. The buggy has the rear suspension/swing axle out of a '66 or '67 Beetle.

Am I correct that the Porsches were IRS? I already have a trans for the swing axle, but it's also from a Beetle (an early one at that), so mating it to the Porsche engine may be a chore.

I just want to know what I'm getting into before I get into it. Is this worth exploring?

Have I insulted all the Porsche purists by even suggesting it?

you would be better to restore the 914 will be much easier, more valuable and drive much better. 914s are rapidly appreciating and the 70 71 bodies are worth a premium for their interchangeability with the 914-6 bodies.

If you have an old 6 volt transaxle you will have to do a lot of grinding to fit the flywheel. Swingaxle or IRS doesn't mater for fitment as the 914 is just a VW type 4 and will bolt up.

Nah, false alarm. Thanks for the input, but the guy who had it [long unhelpful story] and it’s gone.
