I had no idea. Interesting, it does have a serial number if that means anything or is traceable. I just assumed that it is what it says and yes it was a short back when I got it. Everything from the roll bar back I changed.
I also know it was a partly assembled kit. You can tell by the welds what part came assembled and what the buyer welded! |

Chenowth DID build some short back rail frames back in the 70s. I believe that THEY originated the design. I owned one myself back in the mid 70s that was built by Sand Toys, of Orange County, California. Mine had the roll cage B-pillar that came down to the torsion housing. Yours has it coming down to the shock tower behind the torsion. MANY companies have manufactured those short back frames over the decades. For somebody who has made them, I suppose they can tell their own. But I don't know of anybody ever publishing even a list or comparison of the various builders.
IF yours IS a Chenowth, it should have a serial number tag on the torsion housing.
I wasn't saying the frame is "bad" because it's not a Chenowth. Just wanted you to know that it probably is not. _________________ Richard

The serial number on this one is on the horizontal "dash" pipe by the passenger's right knee. It really matters little to me who made it. It works fine and is no longer an original short back anyway. Thanks for the info! |

Doesn't show image. Says "Image may have been reduced in size. click image to view full screen." Yet when I quote the post, it shows the image as being from the gallery. Don't know what's up with that. _________________ Richard

Was it this image?
Looks like an older Berrien with an early Chenowth hood. _________________ Richard

Here is my Buggy that was based off a 1953 Barndoor Single Cab. Sometime in the early 60s someone ingeniously cut and hacked a barndoor single-cab into a buggy. I've known about this for around 20 years and finally got it late last year. The plan is to do preservation and utilizing 36hp with old school hi-po goodies.
Cool things to note:
-single cab treasure chest door has been modified into front hood
-the front seat is indeed a barndoor era bench seat.
-full chassis/drivetrain from barndoor
-wiper assembly from bus from the same area
-dash/steering & column is also barndoor.
-notice the front fenders- its a dogleg and former seat pedestal which had been moved back in the formerly cargo area.

Looks like the head light buckets were cut off the bus too. Very cool buggy. _________________ Prosit!

Thanks for letting me post on here. I’ll post some pictures in the next couple of days. My UVA Fugitive sand buggy I’m restoring is on YouTube. This is my first vw beetle based kit car, and I’m loving the old skool mechanics on these vehicles.
This is one of the episodes from my restoration for anyone interested.
