my dad's 74 bug has a strange front turn signal i am trying to identify. I am pretty sure the bug is a special edition "Love Bug" because it has blacked out trim and volkswagen script, but everything else is chrome, so not 100% sure on that. Anyway, the dr side signal looks "almost normal" it has a clear turn signal instead of the more common see through amber with a chrome top. The passenger side has a clear turn signal but the top is see through amber with a small bulb to light it up. Which 1 is correct for this car assuming it is a Love Bug version? are either correct? is 1 or the other aftermarket or Mexican or Brazil or,,,,,

good question! i checked, i can look through the top of the amber lens and see HELLA on the metal base of the signal, so that part is HELLA but that does not mean the lens is, but none of the plastic on either signal have any markings on them.

Looking at this picture, the lens has the typical 'notch' or 'channel' where the chrome top trim piece would sit. (which is missing in this picture) I don't think it's any special kind of lens.

I believe the above comment is correct, these are likely either sun-faded or purposefully 'treated' or 'bleached' lenses.

The top of the passenger side lens has just not seen as much sun or was not treated since it is typically covered by the chrome 'top'.

I'd say faded lenses and a missing chrome top on the passenger side is all that is at play here.

*Or also possible that someone tried to use some of that 'translucent paint' on a set of clear lenses, but noted that it wasn't working and only did the top of the one lens?

Anyways, if you are looking to replace/match the lenses

+1 to all of this.

My 71 was missing the chrome when I first bought it, and at first I thought it was "kustom" parts.

remove the chrome trim from the other turn signal, check the inner sides of both where the lens is usually covered by the chrome trim. if that area is amber on both, then you have a pair of repro lenses that were likely cast in clear plastic and then painted. I've seen others in the past manufactured like that. the paint has been discoloured by the sun in areas not protected by the trim.

so, i bought some good used turn signals, plastic is actually orange/amber = a good start, then i powdercoated the metal tops gloss black, as my mom's bug is a 74 special edition that should have all blacked out trim, slowly getting it back to stock.

the color may fade even if the color is molded thru the entire plastic, sunlight can penetrate thru the plastic and fade the color even if color is through the thickness. Is is rare to see original VW housing fade, they used a quality coloring formula in molding, but extreme condition can fade even factory stuff, aftermarket is a crap shot for quality.

Bug On!
