Are all VW 2.8's compatible?

Hi,

If I were to source a donor 2.8 engine/transmission from another VW vehicle of the same year as say, a 2003 Eurovan, and drop it in... would it work? Would it be possible to just swap in the control systems from the van onto a long block from some other car? Or did VW use different cams, etc., in the Eurovan?

How interchangeable are they?

The long block from a 2002.5 through 2003 Mk4 Golf/Jetta should work, but the transmissions aren't interchangeable. You would need to swap over the intake, exhaust and oilpan, etc.

A couple years ago there was a late model EV on Craigslist here said to have an R32 engine in it. I have no idea how they got that to fit given that the heads on those are quite different and the AXK version. I'm sure the Brits have figured out some other oddball engine swaps.
