Who's a good used parts supplier? I email a long list to a "Boo-Koo-Z" ([email protected]) a few days ago but they never got back to me. Wondering if there is anyone else. Does ISPWest hawk used stuff? |

You might want to give Joel a couple of days to respond, as he's a 1 man show with other things going on.
Depending on what you need, you might want to look thru the classifieds on the Samba, or see if Jim Adney or Mike Fisher have what you need.
ISP did buy up a source of used parts last summer, so they might have something as well. You'd have to send them an e-mail to find out. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Made contact with Joel. All is super. I had just used the wrong email address.
My next question. I have read a lot on tires recently. I know 165/80R15 is the best size for my car. Not easy to find. So far I have found only one. Can you fit 195/65R15s on my 4.5" rims? I know the manufactures seem to recommend minimum either 5" or 5.5" rms. Is this a must have or a nice to have? Gut feeling says I should just get the one 165 tire I found but I thought I would check first. |

185 is the widest tire for 4.5 rims but they may rub on your car. Stick with the 165s. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

Well, that answers that. On to my next question.
Hub cap on the right is what came with the car, I ordered some more to complete the set. Today at a swap meet I bought 4 of the ones on the left thinking they were going to be the same thing. They are not. What's what?

Today I picked up a rear metal hinge cover. It wasn't in good shape, the rear lip was pretty much gone so I tried to make it better with my new found welding skills.
I think I am just going to buy a good used one. I'm still going to try to make this one better and play with it but I don't think it will ever be very good. I'm still learning.
In hindsight I should have probably just rust painted it and left it alone but I didn't know better. What's the old saying? You need experience to avoid making mistakes and you can only get experience by making mistakes? I think I got some experience today. |

and a bolt on one at that
in my opinion, even an experienced regular joe that does rust repair on his bus would have a problem with that kind of piece. curves and rusted thin metal are not your friend, and in reality the welding isnt so bad it's all in the prep and knowing what to do
they make a fiberglass version of that, never used it though. Anyone tried one?

I appreciate the offer but I already bought one. It's going to be shipped in one lot with the rest of the parts I had to order. Shipping from the US to Canada is brutal so it helps to try to combine parts/orders. By the time this project is done it won't surprise me if I am well north of $500USD in shipping charges. |

Is that all? It's really no big deal. Most of us here have probably spent at least that much.
I think I was in almost 1K USD in shipping for my T-34. Between the window seals coming from Hong Kong, to driving across 3 states to pick up rust repair metal and a windshield, and all the little bits and pieces in between. You do what you have to. I couldn't tell you what I had into my old 71 Notch. For that, I had sheet metal sent from Oregon to Michigan, along with other states for various parts.
I bet Josh is into more than that even. Between buying disc brake kits (both ends), and all of the NOS stuff that came from Germany. Jason is another 1 who probably has a bunch of money invested in shipping as well, be it a whole car, half a container of trailers, or all the little stuff he's bought over the years (can you say hoarder?). Then there's Steve who's shipping nuts and bolts 2 states away to get them finished correctly, and also bought 3 deck lids for his Fastback, because the powder coater screwed up 2 of them.
These are just a couple of people on here that have paid for shipping stuff into/or out of the USA. A lot of us have done so, to finish our project, or get the needed piece to move on. It happens, and it's part of the deal. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

I just did some math. It's actually a lot more. Anyways, it matters not. It is what it is, I just try to minimise it the most I can.
Today's dilemma. For fun I bought some gently used LED head lights. I didn't get chrome ones because they weren't any around. I ended up with black ones. The pro is that they work so so so much better than the original seal ones. Con is that they don't have the vintage look. I somehow always end up driving at night so decent lighting is important to me. With my 911 I ended up sacrificing the look for the sake of better lighting.
My options are:
1) Stay stock
2) Make the switch a live with it
3) Make the switch and get grills in hopes of improving looks
4) Trying to pop the lenses off the LEDs and painting the silver black
5) Stay stock but put the LEDs in some chrome light buckets mounted to the bumper.
Thoughts? |

you may be able to find them locally and cheaper, I'm sure these are chinese and silk screened with his logo |
I'll just be blunt and say: NO.
That creates an absurd amount of glare. You're effectively turning your headlights into floodlamps. This is what oncoming traffic sees:
The set he has, while it's not "attractive" on a classic car, at least has some control of the beam pattern. Even the cheap knock offs have some degree of cutoff on the light pattern. Going with something in the JW Speaker style (like he has) or Truck-Lite style is much more effective, and far far less glare because they were specifically designed for this sort of situation. _________________ My mind not only wanders, sometimes it leaves completely.

So today I tried rebuilding/cleaning my carbs. I had no idea what I was doing but whatever. I took things apart, cleaned, put back together. The biggest pain was cleaning out the piping for, what I think is, the vacuum advance. Just clogged solid. Car must have not ran very well.
Couple of questions. Am I missing anything in the upper corner of the float bowl? I looks like there is a threaded receiver but nothing to do into it.
The other question I have is about the accelerator pump. Which is the correct size. I took out two different sized ones and the replacements that came with my kit are of the taller variety.

Today I did a bit of random work. I cleaned the seats and cleaned up the intake manifolds. Now I'm working on the scrapers.
The seat here is half done and half unfinished. A bit of a difference.

Couple more.
I also did my best to clean out the gas tank and the sender. A lot of stuff came out. Then I 20 min playing 'fish the sock out'. I think I now need a replacement sock. |

I've spent more on shipping costs than a lot of people have on running/driving cars. |
