I picked up this plate frame yesterday. I went out to preview a Bay Window bus for a family friend here in Vegas. They had about seven air cooled VW's there and I saw this plate frame on the back of a 66 square. I offered the owner $50 for it and I think she thought I was crazy, she said are they really worth that much. It is pitted but it is straight.

Just added this frame to my collection it goes well with the dealer sticker on the decklid

Any folks in the Bay Area of CA, especially Berkeley, ever heard of "Earl's Auto Sales"? It also says "Independent Volkswagen Specialists"... ??? It came with the 57 hardtop I just bought...

I have the same frame in my collection I got at Kelley park 15 years ago it was on a 67 Vert decklid I bought and it was on it They were just a repair shop that repaired and sold used VW’s pretty cool they had frames made. That’s all I know about them and I’m sure you knew that already too wish I knew more but I’m sure they are long gone.

Yes, this what I believe too.
Not a real dealer as I couldn't find them in any of my dealer lists on the site but probably a long-term repair place since they went to the trouble of getting plate frames made.
A Google search shows them come up as advertising in the Oakland, CA Tribune newspaper but I couldn't view the actual page without creating an account on the site that came up.
