Hi All,
My Dune Runner was originally a decent red metallic, then a PO painted over it with a strange blue. Decades ago it looks like.
My question, what is the likelyhood of striping the blue off and restoring the red?
Ways to attempt? Was thinking chemical stripper for the blue the fine sanding the primer off, followed by more or less polishing and clearing. It's all in all a pretty original buggy and would like to restore it to it's original state for now.
Thoughts? |

You'll have to experiment a little since you don't know what the paint type is that he used. Start easy - lacquer thinner - and see if it dissolves. If no joy, then move to acetone. If no joy then, aircraft stripper - but you have to babysit that stuff. You don't want a heavy chemical stripper sitting on the fiberglass any longer than it needs to be. |

Keep in mind most people do not paint over a great metal flake finish for no reason.
You will most likely find holes, patches and possibly damage under the blue paint. At least that has been my experience on the 8+ bodies I have worked on. _________________ LOOKING FOR VINTAGE MEYERS MANX STUFF!!!

Spot on....a careful examination on the underside of the buggy can be very informative. The rear license plate and tail light area as well as under the front fenders..... |

Good points about the damage aspect. That said, a lot of people did a lot of goofy things to these without much reason. I have been all around underneath this body refurbishing virtually every mechanical part in the car and have only come across one area that seemed to be patched; the first bolt for the hood near the windshield, drivers side was glassed over. There is some sagging in the rear due to age, over the horizontal cross bar that supports the rear section. It's bolted to the top of the rear shock towers and there is a slight hump running crosswise through the center of the rear seat. |

Mine was originally red metalflake. In some places where the original flake has been exposed it is now mostly silver or pink ... faded very badly. _________________ Brian
