"Childhood Toy"

Here's a good condition original Matchbox no.34 Volkswagen Caravette Camper in light green from ca. 1962.

This is a toy that I recently traded for as I had this toy when I was a child. Smile

A happy reunion with a classic Matchbox Volkswagen.

Enjoy!

Tom

Matchbox has released several Volkswagen models in the past 5 years or so. Split Window, 1970 Bay Window, 1962 Beetle, Karmann Ghia convertible, Thing. I think they have a Type 3 Ghia as well now.

Here's what I have in my small collection.

The stores around me seem to have mostly given up on Matchbox, typically there's only 3 or 5 hangers that aren't even full of cars. Mattel must be pushing Hot Wheels more as there are usually tubs of Hot Wheels plus numerous hangers of cars.

The bus IS a Matchbox. The bug might be a Matchbox too, not positive. What do you all think?

I have that bug, in that color, from my childhood. It does say Matchbox on the bottom.

Those are clearly both Matchbox. The 34A VW microvan with silver wheels is highly sought by collectors.

Kudos to Matchbox for reissuing this toy, hopefully it gets more kids interested in our odd little (Type 3) corner of classic VW’s.

On to some pics:

And the comparison to an original (noted as no.67, Volkswagen 1600TL)

The differences would indicate that Matchbox did not use the same tooling as the original.

Big differences when seen side by side. Makes me wonder if there were other casting differences over the past fifty years?

'65 Fastbacks do exist! Smile

They started in 1966 for those who don't know - sort of a website inside joke as people sometimes advertise Fastbacks as 1965

It's cool they came put with that again, I'll look for one

The two are very different, probably shared nothing in design or molds.

It is funny that although Matchbox has always pursued greater scale and detail accuracy than HW- they more frequently have an unlikely model year printed on the package!

Wow, what an interesting reboot.

With all due respect to the cats at Matchbox, I think I'd still rather hunt for a clean original.

Yeah, comparing the two in the photo above makes it clear the new one was pretty careless, and was not based on the old model. The curves of the hood and front/rear glass are wrong in the new one.

Interesting how the older model used an "outie" for the body gap lines, while the new one uses an "innie." While technically the "innie" is more correct, visually the crisper line of the "outie" looks truer overall, probably due to the feature thinness and lack of paint filling the new model's gaps.
