Well it's a 111, a 1200 "L" , 40 H.P., and a swing axle. It was produced January 18, 1978 and it's the last Beetle produced in Germany and made at the Emden plant.
The car has been in three TV documentaries, on the old Speed Vision, Fine living channel, Discovery History channel.
It's in Hans O. Neubauer book called " Volkswagen" " Beetle and Derivatives".

Nothing like celebrating your new unemployment. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.
GOFUNDYOURSELF, quit asking everyone to do it for you!
An air cooled VW will make you a hoarder.
Do something, anything, to your project every day, and you will eventually complete it. |

Looks like they made 19,300,000 Beetles and 19,299,999 sets of headlight rings. |

and here is the German News video of it:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Me-IrYNQB1k
The first shipload of Mexican Beetles had arrived already four weeks earlier on Dec. 15th 1977. A part of the factory staff who worked in the Beetle production at the Emden plant now had the task to complete and control the Mexican made Beetles. These were delivered to some countries of Europe for 7 more years, so fortunately not everybody had to look for a new job. Besides, Rabbit and Dasher production for the US market increased.
The Mexican Beetles differed in many not too obvious details from the German made ones. Most regrettably, the 50 hp engine was no longer available but only the 34 hp. No longer available were also the sun roof and many metallic color Options. Available colors were only these: :
We put a lot of details on our website,

but up to now time was missing for an English translation. |

I think some trim pieces were shipped in a separate package to avoid damage during transport. |
