Boy that is quite the difference in price from what I paid most of a decade ago. At the time what I paid was in line with the cheaper units, now it's what? Three times the cost? I think I have something like 8 years on mine at this point in time.

Mike I know you had a thread once on it but how did you control temperatures? The air coming forward in that tube can really warp plastics etc.

I just wired the diverter valve for the rear open a tad so with the fan on I am actually sucking in a bit of cool air through the rear vents. My setup is part of a complete system, I dump the right heater box directly under the right side of the rear seat and only run the output of one heater box forward to the windshield. I feel I get about three times the stock amount of heat into the cab. The right heater box that dumps under the seat puts out a phenomenal amount of very hot air, I have turned all sorts of plastic into globs when things have been left in front of it, you can feel the air flow from it while sitting in the driver's seat. The heat to the windshield from the left heater box augmented by the fan is much higher in volume than stock and right at 160° which is within the heat tolerance range for the PVC Blumaxx fan.

If and when my Blumaxx fan dies, I will install a Dayton all metal centrifugal fan directly under the heater/defroster tee.

The definitive answer on heat in your bus. Granted these parameters are based on a T4 motor and a far superior late model bay window bus. No puny T1 config, under powered weenie motor here. Rolling Eyes Cool Laughing

So your true output readings may vary. Here is the data as received with a bus with working stock heat and a piggyback BN4 Eberspacher Gas Heater. Anything else is just opinion. And we all know what those are Rolling Eyes

Complain all you want about puddles, rain, colder climate, space aliens....what ever the fuck all. Here is proof of how a bus heater works with a BN4 for back up. If you need more info than this, I suggest you collect some actual data....proof other than hearsay and or opinion. Rolling Eyes The bus heat as provided from VW is good. In these vids its like 80 deg at 35 to 50 mph bursts. If we went on the freeway and maintained 3k RPM at longer intervals - this heat would go up. If you do not think this is ample heat, then go buy a Honda. For reals.

Done.

Can you do a similar one from cold with just the stock heater (no BN4 etc) - how long does it take for the air to heat up enough to defrost the windshield?

And I'm guessing from the first video that 20 minutes and the bus is really up to temperature up front anyway - air coming out of the rear facing vents under the walkthrough and the one under the middle seat would be interesting for temps, too, for the passengers back there.

This is the one we did after we fixed it. No BN4 running. First one driving is after about 10 minute idle in driveway.

That's great, thanks!

Now I just need to get underneath mine at some point and work out why there's no airflow, let alone, heat through the dashtop vents - when I can get it started again, of course...

So, starting at the back, check connections and general condition of:

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Blower fan
Tubes from blower fan to heat exchangers
Heat exchangers themselves
Heat riser elbows
Heat control pods
Heater cables and clamps
Heater tubes
Tubes from concertina tubes to central heater tube over rear axle
Central heater tube itself (connections, condition, is it blocked?)
Diverter for walkthrough rear-facing duct and middle seat duct
Connection to totem pole
Connection to foot vents
Connection to dashtop vents

Is that all of it? Laughing

Zero air flow typically means mice nest or missing parts.

Making sure the door and window seals are good, the doors close fully I can get 15 to 20 degrees F increase in interior temperature with stock plan heating but with aftermarket not-so-good heat exchangers.
Wearing gloves and a hat is a good idea.

little furry creatures, mice and rats. I caught one in a havahart squirrel trap a few weeks ago. It was late at night and cold so I just left it in the trap until morning then dealt with it. By morning it had pulled in every leaf, twig, rock, bird feather, etc., within reach, and that passed its way to build a big nest inside the trap where it was all snuggled into the nest waiting for room service to deliver breakfast. All I could think was, "OMG how many of your cousins have wrecked VW bus heaters that quick?"

$6.00 for a set - It works well. A little mod with the dremel tool and they magnet in place perfect. You get to feel the heat instead of it blowing straight up into the abyss. As well as everything else mentioned before.
