Guys,
I have a '72 beetle and my engine just died. I'm in the midst of rebuilding a 40 horse from my '62 that's in the shop for bodywork. Can I put the completed '62 40 horse engine in the '72 without too much trouble, so I can drive it until I get to the '72 dual port?

thanks,

Is the 40 hp still 6v ? You could use a 6v 200mm flywheel to use later diaphragm pressure plate because 62 pressure plate will not work with later throw out bearing. Also starter will be a problem

Just one problem, you can't put an O-ring flywheel onto a step crankshaft...

I do not know how to fix this. All I can say is it all works fine for me with what I use, Firefox.

Type 2 & 3 flywheels up through '65 are 200mm, 109 tooth count, and no o-ring.

Yes, but how likely are you be having one of those. The bog standard flywheel likely to be found in a 72 Beetle will not fit the USA 40HP crank unless you machine it. I'm just warning that you can't just easily shift everything over.

Six volt 200mm flywheels aren't difficult to find if you look for them.

You are right and then there’s the starter. You could use the 6 volt to match the 6 volt 200mm flywheel but I’d turn down the shaft to smaller 12v size rather than use Mickey Mouse thin conversion bushing. A real challenge to beginners but it’s doable. Concerning availability of 6v 200mm flywheel I found one at swap this year for 5 bucks, nobody knew what it was.

Question: since it appears some folks have had good luck removing the center ring on early diaphragm style 200mm pressure plates, converting them in essence to late style, do you think it would be possible to do the same with a diaphragm style 180mm pressure plate? This would help avoid having to swap out flywheels and reset endplay.

Yeah, but why buy a niche product for just a temporary use. I guess its rarity might have re-sale value later on though.

Going away from the flywheel stuff, I will relate the time when I pulled the 1600DP engine out of my Baja Bug for repairs and temporarily placed into it a spare big-bore 40HP (1385) engine - the whole engine setup with the 180mm flywheel/clutch and I swapped starters to make it work. The car drove OK but man, it was annoyingly gutless compared to my normal engine.

Edit: I just noticed the latest question. Yes some people have removed the contact plate on 180 diaphragm clutches to make them work with the later setup.

Thanks for all the replies. I guess when I get the 40 HP rebuilt, I'll see what happens.
