Well according to the PO the heater control cable was too short so his answer was to just wire the heater boxes open when it gets cold and adjust the temperature with the the various windows. Effective but not practical since we get a bit of rain here in the Pacific NW.

So I bought a new cable setup and installed it. Again too short by about 2.5" to 3". The only thing that I can figure is that since it is not the original engine (1600dp) that the heater boxes are further toward the rear of the bus. The new cables are the #211 711 629b which is the bus cable for all years up to 1967. The bay cable is completely different so whats a guy to do?

I don't have a solution for you but there is not one set of heater cables for all Buses through 1967. There are at least 4-5.

Walkthrus alone use a different set than bench seat Buses.

Everett, this is great info. I do have a walkthru. My boxes are connected at the bottom so they do line up with the tubes. I'll look into what the correct cable is. Thanks!

I just checked the Wolfsburg West site and it lists the walkthru as using the 211 711 629"c" version. The retailer sold me the "B" version which is for the non-walkthru.

I'll post if it works out ok.

I have the same issue in my SC so I bought a set of Accelerator cable extensions and they work good, and I didn't even have to replace the heater cable.

like this one:
http://www.jbugs.com/store/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=3171&Category_Code=
and are readily available at any VW shop

Looks like I have a short cable... Just a 64 Kombi non-walkthrough. Number on package is 211 711 629B. I could just make an extension.

Was hoping to have heat for our weekend trip but likly won't need it anyway.

This is with flap open and control shut so about 2 or 3" short per side.

In my opinion, a lot of times cable length issues are caused by varying tolerances in aftermarket heater boxes and levers. I commonly make a new strap from regular perforated strapping (hardware store stuff) cut to length. I'm generally not shooting for Pebble Beach quality.

I save those lever links off wasted heater boxes for this situation. With a small nut/bolt you can make those double length. They can also be bought in heater box lever kits.

But walkthrough cables aren't longer than bench seat ones. On walkthrus the passenger side is longer than the drivers side cable.
If my cable would be too short, i would make extensions.

The walk-thru cable looks 35mm longer from their listings.

I once installed a standard one in my walk through bus. Drivers side was fine, passenger side too short, and built an extension for that.
Later I managed to get a walk through cable, and that was asymmetrical, one side longer (probably 35mm).
This wouldn't help the OP if both cables are too short.

FWIW, the passenger 'side' was too short b/c the cable was too short.

Awesome.. I have the same problem... 62 Panel, bench seat with a T1 1600 DP and Bug heater boxes.. The cables on both sides are about 2-3 inches short.. This extension using aluminum rod is brilliant!! Thx...
