I tried to get my front suspension put back together.
I was excited because I will finally be able to use the drop spindles I bought in 2001.
Unbeknown to me I had inner bearings for 66-68. That's what I get for shopping under the influence. Surprisingly, O'Reilly had some in stock so the day wasn't ruined. Just another $21.00
So I got the rotors on and started to install the Stainless Steel brake lines and calipers.
Frozen Caliper!
I managed to free one side up, but not the other.
They were NEW---13 unused years ago.
Anyhoo, new ones are on the way. _________________ Volkswagen!

Got some new goodies. Since my calipers were frozen I got two new Varga calipers. They're a different color now.
Installed a quick steer plate. I buggered up my right inner tie rod end threads using an air hammer to remove it so I buzzed down to Herrell VW parts to get another one. It was only $10.00 which was amazing since everyone else, and I mean everyone, wants $30.00 plus shipping. I should've gotten a lot more things from them. I should have taken a few photos while I was there. Neat place and nice setup. They had a complete resto going on with the body of a 68 or so Beetle primed and blocked. Pretty good salvage cars in the lot too.
So I got the calipers on. Now I'm ready to bleed. As if I haven't done enough of that already.
So now where to mount the Carter fuel pump?

My understanding is a stock Ghia is 2.9 turns lock to lock (?) and a Porsche 356 is 2 lock to lock. Where do you end up with the quick steering plate? Or even better, maybe you can share you impressions after you road test it. Thanks _________________ 1964 MG Midget MK1 Monte Carlo Replica

Great question!
I had 2 3/4 turns lock to lock to start with allowing a little slop.
After I installed the quick steer, I still had 2 3/4 turns.
I have to mount the wheels and then adjust the stops so nothing starts to rub.
As it is now the turns are the same but the spindle movement is exaggerated.
I’ll be sure to get on that. _________________ Volkswagen!

It’s a ‘94 Corvette color called Black Rose Metallic. Actually, it’s very hard to capture an accurate image of it as the paint changes with the light color. _________________ Volkswagen!

OK so I had to follow up.
I put the front wheels on and took some pictures.
Then turned the wheels until they hit something in both directions.
They got close towards the rear of the tire but stopped on the top control arm and the sway bar as well.
At no time did either stop contact its limiter bolt.
They original stops were too short so I just found some longer ones, backed the wheel off until it didn't rub and bolted it down.
My original lock to lock was 2 3/4 turns, now it is 1 1/8 turns lock to lock. _________________ Volkswagen!

Couple hose clamps to the beam is an idea, To keep its vibrations/noise away from cabin. Do you have the shut off relay to go with it ? (from a Rabbit) Its a good idea ,just in case ........I ran a carter for awhile but it died after a couple years. My last roadside emergency , But kept a spare mechanical set up in my spare stash. Able to swap out then and there. Bought a spare mechanical next day, just in case......I'll send you the relay if you want it |

Wow! Looking great Jeff. I also used longer bolts for proper steering stop. I have no issues with my turning radii (as long as the air ride is at 50% or higher)... And I have 17X7s. _________________ My 70 beetle was totaled Now to build the Ghia I always wanted. Rest in peace Ruby, I will miss you. Hello <insert Ghia name here>! |

OK, so I realized that my halfway carburetor rebuild wouldn't make me happy. I wasn't comfortable pulling the throttle shafts and butterflies so I ended up with all new O-rings and sticky shafts.
There's a Virgin/Sailor joke there somewhere.
So, I sent them out to "mcdragracer" Rick for a thorough going through.
Here are some photos of them before I sent them:
and here are progress photos he sent me as things went along.
I apologize if they really aren't in order.
I'm very impressed by the level of service but then again, it is personalized service and very hard to find these days. Maybe one day when we really have a free internet, us little guys can be found as well. Some other fine people on this forum recommended him to me and based on my experience, I would enthusiastically recommend him as well.
I get the feeling he puts a lot of love in his efforts.
Or maybe he just puts them in that washing machine _________________ Volkswagen!

It was a pleasure to do redo your carburetors for you, I'm glad you chose me to redo your carbs as opposed to purchase the empi clones, I think your carbs came out near New condition, they were in very good shape and should give you very many years good service, looking at your post on your ghia your car is phenomenal and very classic, have fun in your restoration and rebuild, and of course if you would to have any questions with your carburetors or tuning or anything you're always welcome to contact me
Thanks for your buisness,
Rick |

Removed the rear bumper and sent it to Advanced Plating for a thorough refinishing. Was done 12 years ago (BADLY) by Georgia Bumper and rust was seeping through.

Advance Plating had a fire. Big bummer all the way around. Luckily for me, my bumpers were not affected by the fire, but now, instead of expecting them in a few weeks, I’ll be looking for them in March or April.
Hopefully sooner. I’d like to make Lakeland. _________________ Volkswagen!
