I currently have a set of rebuild single port heads. I want to build a torquey engine for off roading so my plan was to build a 1835cc with single port heads, stock crank and flywheel. My question is should I add a cam and/or rocker arms to try and increase my upper end hp? My heads are going to be starving the engine in the upper rpm range. |

I run 1835cc DP engine with stock crankshaft, stock cam, stock heads (except for opening for the cylinders), stock rods, German 009 distributor, single Weber 40DCNF, stock pressure plate and disc. And since back in 1976.
And that engine is currently in my 1971 Convertible, and I drove it today, top down, and it runs great, has a lot of power, and is a ton of fun !!! _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. I currently have a pict 30/31 for it but would probably go with a dual kad setup. Unless someone has a better idea:) |

This is good news! Have you ever tried an 1835 with single port carbs? I feel like this is my limiting component. |

Kads or 34 pci would be a good choice.
Cam, cb 2280, 2232 for even more midrange torque, 2239 or w100 for more mid"upper" rpm torque
Remember to set cr to the cam |

No, have no personal experience with 1835cc and SP heads. Back in 1976 I upgraded to dual port heads when I changed a 1970 SP 1600cc engine to 1835cc DP. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. A couple years ago I did a stock crank thick wall 1835 for an early baywindow. CB2280 cam, blended bowls and a good valve job, 8.3cr, .045dh, 30/31 carb and a 009. I used a standard 1 3/8" header and single quiet pack, and I redid the heat risers so they would circulate through the manifold. I also made a hot air box for the carb. Great engine. Easy to build, good mpg, and way more power then a 1600. Worked great in all weather.
I am now building another stock crank 1835cc for my own early bay. This one has a CB2232, 140cfm 35x32 DP heads, and 40mm DCNF carbs. It is kind of a sweep the floor engine for myself.
I would build yours with a CB2239, 8.5cr, 1 3/8" header and a set of Kads.

I'm about 80k miles on my 1776 (almost 92 pistons) with stock crank and rods..
C25 cam and 1:25 rockers.. 40x35.5 heads slightly worked runners and 40's with 32vents.. this car has been my daily for many years.. 25+ MPG --
just a mild easy going motor in my 68 with stock trans.. crazy how long it has been around and still runs just as good..

Keep the cam mild with SP heads.
CB cheater would be good with stock carb
FK-41 or engle 100, or....what alstrup said, with kadrons, should work well. |
